The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one of the company’s most anticipated smartphones in 2021. This is a foldable device that is supposed to replace this year’s Galaxy Note handset. It is expected to become the first foldable smartphone to support Samsung’s S Pen stylus. Samsung will even release a brand new type of S Pen just for this device, to protect its display. The Z Fold 3 will become the third foldable smartphone in that series, following the Galaxy Fold and Z Fold 2.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 rumors and leaks have been popping up for quite some time now. We do have a good idea as to what to expect, and that’s something we’ll try to present in this article. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be an extremely important smartphone for Samsung, no matter the way you spin things. It is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3, its sibling, but that’s not all. Samsung is allegedly planning for quite a few launches during that Unpacked event, more on that later in the article.
This article will be regularly updated with new information on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 (this is a preview article) — both official teasers and credible leaks, rumors, and insider claims — as it becomes available in the run-up to the release of the upcoming Android smartphone. The last update was made on June 9.
A refinement of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 design
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 won’t exactly be a complete design revamp compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Samsung does not need to do something like that, as it did a great job with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. This handset will be an improvement, though, as Samsung is expected to further refine the design. The phone will be made out of metal and glass, just like its predecessor. It will have two displays, though it will no longer include a display camera hole on the inside. The phone is rumored to feature an under-display camera on its main display. A display camera hole is still expected on the “cover” display, though.
Some images did surface
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 design did surface in a series of images. Truth be said, those images weren’t the best out there, but they could be accurate. If you take a look at the gallery below this paragraph, you’ll be able to see them, four images are included. Do take them with a grain of salt, though. As you can see, these images show three cameras on the back, in the top-left corner. Those cameras are vertically-aligned, and are protruding on the back. The hinge looks similar to the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 2, at least from the outside. That hinge is visible when the phone is folded, but gets hidden when the phone gets unfolded. In one of those images, you’ll see the caption saying “It’s the first foldable with under-display camera”. Even the company’s stylus is shown in one of the images.
“Armor Frame” and four color variants
Those are the only leaked images of the phone. There are several other things worth noting, though. First and foremost, you won’t be able to dock the S Pen stylus inside the phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is said to support the S Pen, a new variant of it, but you’ll need a case for docking purposes. The S Pen stylus probably also won’t be included in the package, chances are you’ll have to buy it separately. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also expected to offer a stronger frame, as Samsung trademarked something called “Armor Frame”, and is expected to utilize that on the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
One rumor even surfaced claiming that Samsung has found a way to solve the ‘crease’ issue. In other words, if it’s true, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 may ship with a less visible crease, or no crease at all. That’s difficult to expect based on the previous models, but it’s possible.
The device will arrive in four different color variants
What about its colors? Well, based on the leaked info, the device will arrive in four different color options. Those options are Beige, Black, Green, and Silver. A rather convincing concept image also appeared, showing us what the phone could look like. Do note this is not a leak, though, even though it’s based on leaks.
Powerful specs expected with two 120Hz displays, and the Snapdragon 888
What can we expect in regards to specs? Well, the very first “top secret” AMD GPU is rumored for the device, but that almost certainly won’t happen. Samsung and AMD are working on an Exynos chip with an AMD GPU, and it may arrive next year, but it won’t be included inside the Galaxy Z Fold 3. A well-known tipster is “100% sure” that the Snapdragon 888 will fuel the device. Various sources reported the same thing.
When it comes to the phone’s displays, things will be somewhat similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The device will feature a 7.55-inch main display, and a 6.21-inch cover panel. That means that its main and “cover” displays will be slightly smaller than on the Galaxy Z Fold 2, but the difference will be so small, it’s not even worth noting. We are expecting 120Hz support from the Galaxy Z Fold 3, from both its displays, actually. We’re not sure if it will happen, but that’s what’s expected. Also, both panels will be of AMOLED variety.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will utilize two batteries
What about its battery? Well, you can expect two batteries here, actually, based on the certification information. You can expect 2,060mAh and 2,215mAh battery packs to work as a single 4,275mAh unit. Samsung will probably market it as a 4,400mAh battery, which means it will sit slightly below the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s 4,500mAh battery capacity. What about charging? Well, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is tipped to use 25W max charging. Some of you may find that disappointing, but there you have it. Wireless charging will almost certainly be included as well.
The device will be water and dust resistant
What is also worth noting, is that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will offer an IP rating this time around. We’re not sure what level, exactly, but it will be water and dust resistant. That will make it the first foldable from the company to offer such rating. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will weigh 269 grams, allegedly. If that’s true, that means it will be 13 grams lighter than its predecessor. That’s still quite hefty, but that’s what you get with foldables. It will be thicker, than the Galaxy Z Fold 2, though. There’s a good reason for that. The device will include a digitizer for the S Pen. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to ship with Android 11, and Samsung’s One UI skin on top of it. Samsung will most likely utilize 256GB of storage here, but more than one variant is possible.
Is an adaptive UI on the way?
A rather well-known tipster has suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will user in a new, adaptive UI. That UI will allegedly be called ‘Split UI’, and will be able to rearrange elements of apps based on which screen and which orientation you’re using. You can read more about it here.
Five cameras expected, one of them will sit under the main display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to offer five cameras. Three of them will be placed on its back, one under the main (foldable) display, and one inside the “cover” display on the outside. The device is tipped to use three 12-megapixel cameras on its back. Two of those will likely be identical to the ones on the Galaxy S21, the main and ultra-wide ones. The third camera on the back will probably be a telephoto one, but we’ll see.
In regards to its under-display camera, the company is rumored to use Sony’s IMXx71 series camera sensor, with 1um pixel size. Even Samsung’s ad teased the arrival of an under-display camera to the device. That camera will, allegedly, be more visible than what ZTE had to offer, and it will offer a lot better light transmittance. When it comes to the cover display camera, a 10-megapixel Sony IMX374 sensor is expected, a sensor with a 1.22um pixel size. That is the very same sensor that the Galaxy S21 is using, by the way. That is pretty much all the camera information that we have thus far.
August launch expected, no info on pricing just yet
You’re probably wondering when will the Galaxy Z Fold 3 launch? Well, the device was initially rumored to arrive in July, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The latest report claims that both phones will launch in August, though, alongside the Galaxy S21 FE. That makes sense, considering that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 production started. That’s not all, though, as the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch Active 4 are also tipped to launch at the same time. That will be one huge event for Samsung, if there’s any truth to the report.
It wouldn’t exactly be surprising if all those devices arrive in August, as that’s the Galaxy Note launch timeframe. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is essentially expected to replace this year’s Galaxy Note handset, so… there you go. An exact launch date was not mentioned, we’ll have to wait for more information. When it comes to pricing, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is rumored to be up to $400 cheaper than its predecessor.
