Google Discover is being used by many people these days. It’s an endless feed of news from various sources that are based on your interests. Google Discover also tends to include YouTube videos in the feed (as a separate card), and they do utilize an autoplay function. There is a way to change that, though. In this article, we’ll show you how to disable video autoplay in Google Discover on your Android smartphone.
I, personally, tend to disable video autoplay almost everywhere. Instagram is probably the only app that has it enabled in my case. So, if you’re similar, you’ll want to disable video autoplay in Google Discover. The procedure is quite straightforward, and you’ll do it in a jiffy, as soon as you know exactly what to press. We’ll explain it in detail, one step at a time, and you’ll also find screenshots included down below, to lead you every step of the way.
How to disable video autoplay in Google Discover
So, there are two ways to access Google Discover. On some Android phones, you can simply swipe from left to right on your homescreen. That is the case with Google’s Pixel phones, and a number of phones from other OEMs. So, your leftmost screen is essentially Google Discover. If that’s not the case on your phone, don’t worry, as you can simply open the Google app. That’s what we’ll do for the purpose of this tutorial. Access your app drawer, and find the Google app.
Once you do that, Google Discover will open, as it will be located right underneath the Google search bar. If you’d like to disable video autoplay, you’ll need to tap on your profile pictures in the top-right corner.
A pop-up menu will appear with a bunch of options. What we’re interested in is the ‘Settings’ option, tap it.
A ton of options will appear here as well, and you’ll need to enter the first one on the list, the ‘General’ menu.
Once you scroll down a bit, you’ll spot the ‘Autoplay video previews’ menu here, which is exactly what we’re looking for.
If you enter that menu, a new pop-up menu will appear, showing you three options. The ‘Never’ option will disable video autoplay in Google Discover, so you’ll want to select that one. In addition to that, however, you also have ‘Only on Wi-Fi’ and ‘On Wi-Fi & mobile data’. You can, alternatively, leave video autoplay on, but limit it to play only when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
