Samsung is still working on a fix for the halo effect issue with the Galaxy S23 camera. The company’s customer support recently told a user that the camera team is aware of the issue and is preparing a solution. The next update for the device will bring the fix, the customer support confirmed.

“Improvements are in progress and will be included in the next version,” the official response reads (machine translated from Chinese). Reputed tipster Ice Universe shared a screenshot of the message on Twitter, revealing that the conversation happened on the 3rd of this month. This makes us wonder whether the “next version” means the May or June update.

Many of you probably already know that the May update has been available for the Galaxy S23 series for almost a week now. Samsung initially released it in select countries in Europe and Asia but has since expanded the rollout to many other regions, including the US. More importantly, it doesn’t appear to have fixed the problem, which is an HDR-related issue.

However, the May update is yet to reach Galaxy S23 users in China. Since this response came from Samsung’s Chinese customer support staff, it’s possible that the company would bundle the fix with this month’s update in the country. In that case, it may release a second May update for the latest flagships in other markets. A rumor in mid-April also suggested that the problem will be fixed in May.

But if the customer support is referring to the June release, then Galaxy S23 users will have to live with the halo effect issue for about a month more. The problem is more apparent in low-light photos. Objects in the photo have an abnormal outline across the borders (see the sample below).

All three models have had this issue since their early days. Samsung has already pushed multiple camera updates to the Galaxy S23 lineup, but this issue remains unpatched.

The next Galaxy S23 update may bring more camera improvements

Along with a fix for the halo effect issue, Samsung is reportedly also preparing to improve the quality of low-light photos taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Both of these quality improvements could come with the same update later this month or early next month.

We will let you know when the rollout begins. Meanwhile, you can manually check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install.
