Microsoft may modernize its next Surface Duo smartphone. According to a new report, the Surface Duo 3 will feature a foldable display, and not the dual-screen setup its predecessors rocked.

The Surface Duo 3 may ditch its dual-screen setup, and include a foldable display

This report comes from Windows Central, and it’s actually quite interesting. It’s not only interesting because it claims the Surface Duo 3 will finally become a proper foldable smartphone. The other part of the report explains how Microsoft scrapped its initial plans.

It seems like Microsoft had the design ready for a dual-screen Surface Duo 3. The phone was supposed to feature “narrower and taller edge-to-edge displays, wireless charging, and other improvements”. The design was finalized, and was expected to arrive at the end of this year. Microsoft decided to scrap it, though.

It is said that this decision comes “after a long year of hardware prototyping and experimentation”. The phone will offer a 180-degree hinge, an internal foldable display, and an external cover display. The HONOR Magic Vs and Vivo X Fold were listed as examples of similar products.

The phone is still expected to arrive in the Fall of 2023

That’s pretty much everything we know at this point. Chances are the phone will still launch towards the end of this year, in the Fall. There is always a chance Microsoft will have to push back the launch, though.

The report does also state that “Microsoft is eager to expand its line of Android smartphone offerings” and that the company has “prototyped several traditional slab smartphone designs”. So, we may expect some other devices to come from the company.

Needless to say, Microsoft is one of the largest tech companies in the world. The company has a lot of cash to burn, and if it is serious about Android and devices powered by the platform, we could really see some compelling devices being released moving forward. If this report is accurate, the Surface Duo 3 will surely be interesting. It remains to be seen how will Microsoft differentiate.
