Back in April, a rather annoying bug was introduced to Pixel phones. The April Pixel security update actually brought a bug that started randomly changing ringtones and notification audio settings. Well, that ringtone bug seems to be back, as we’ve spotted it on the Pixel 7 Pro.

The ringtone bug is back, this time it’s on the Pixel 7 Pro

One of my colleagues bought the Pixel 7 Pro at launch, and he recently noticed this bug on the phone. He noticed that the Pixel 7 Pro started using a random notification sound as a ringtone. At that point, he switched it back to his ringtone of choice, and things were fine for a short period of time. It got switched again.

My colleague tried installing Zedge, and applying a ringtone via the app, a ringtone that is not already available on the phone, hoping that would solve the issue. It did not, the ringtone got switched again.

Now, previously, a factory reset did the trick for some people, but considering what a hassle that is on Android, that’s not the ideal solution. We’re not sure why is this bug back now, but let’s hope that the next update will fix it.

I tried looking on Reddit, and it doesn’t seem like this is a widespread problem, at least not at the moment. Usually, when it comes to such Pixel bugs, Reddit is filled with reports, as was the case back in April.

This problem doesn’t seem to be as widespread as it was earlier this year

It’s possible this problem is affecting a very limited number of units. We’re not even sure if it’s affecting any other phone other than the Pixel 7 Pro. If you do have this issue, you may want to report it.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro had a relatively bug-free launch, unlike their predecessors. Some minor problems were spotted, but nothing too serious. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro had a ton of bugs, and it took Google quite some time to fix everything. Those two phones did introduce Google’s first SoC, and they did run a brand new, revamped version of Android, so that does explain things to a certain degree.

This ringtone bug sure is annoying, but it’s not a major issue, at least we don’t think it is. It would be nice if Google patched it up as soon as possible, though.
