Samsung has rolled out the July 2022 Android security patch to one more device in the US. The Galaxy A53 5G is the latest beneficiary. The newly-launched premium mid-range smartphone received this month’s security update in South Korea last week. Users in other parts of the world can expect to pick up the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in the coming days.
Rolling out with firmware version A536U1UES2AVF1, the July SMR for the Galaxy A53 5G in the US is currently limited to unlocked units. The update is already available on pretty much all carrier networks, including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Bluegrass Cellular, and Xfinity Mobile. Users on the remaining few carriers should receive the update within a few days. The carrier-locked counterparts should also pick up the new security patch soon.
While the July update in Samsung’s homeland contained additional bug fixes and stability improvement, the US units only seem to be getting the latest SMR. There’s plenty to talk about the new security release, though. According to Samsung, the July SMR patches more than 60 vulnerabilities in its Android devices. These include 23 Android OS issues patched by Google, three of which were critical ones. The Korean firm itself fixed 41 security flaws that only affected its smartphones and tablets.
Called SVEs (Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures), some of the security flaws that Samsung patched this month compromised its Knox security platform, allowing attackers to bypass the security of your device. The Korean behemoth also patched issues with Messages, Contacts, App Lock, Finder, App Linker, TelephonyUI, and many other critical services.
Galaxy A53 5G receives the July update in the US
Samsung launched the Galaxy A53 5G in March this year. It arrived alongside the Galaxy A33 5G and the Galaxy A73 5G. While the latter two receive quarterly security updates, the former gets new releases every month thanks to Samsung offering it as an enterprise model. The July SMR is now rolling out to the premium mid-ranger.
As usual, the latest OTA (over the air) update for the Galaxy A53 5G is rolling out in batches. It could take a few days before the rollout covers all eligible units in a region. You will be notified once the new software package becomes available for your unit. You can also manually check for updates by navigating to Settings > Software update and tapping on Download and install. If you don’t see any pending updates, check again a few days later.
