Samsung has a new low-cost 5G smartphone in the works. We are talking about the Galaxy A23 5G that we have been hearing about for several months now. It could finally be nearing its market release and is seemingly headed to the US.

We first heard about the Galaxy A23 5G in January this year. Early reports said Samsung plans to launch the phone “in the coming months,” alongside a non-5G variant. Partly in line with those reports, the company announced the 4G-flavored Galaxy A23 in early March. But the 5G version continued to elude the official announcement. It may not for much longer, though.

Earlier today, the Galaxy A23 5G showed up on benchmarking platform Geekbench bearing the model number SM-A236U (via). This should be the US variant of the phone, confirming its availability stateside. Of course, the handset will go on sale in other regions as well, including Europe.

As usual, the Geekbench listing also reveals the processor and RAM details of the phone. It doesn’t explicitly mention the chipset, but the codenames and specs — two cores operating at 2.21GHz and six at 1.80GHz, with the Adreno 619 GPU in tow — suggest it’s the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, which does have an integrated 5G modem.

Another notable takeaway from this sighting is that the Galaxy A23 5G will run Android 12 out of the box, likely with Samsung’s One UI 4.1 on top. It will come with 4GB of RAM. We cannot rule out the possibility of Samsung offering the phone in other memory options, though.

The Galaxy A23 5G may borrow cameras from its 4G-only sibling

According to earlier rumors, the Galaxy A23 5G could feature a 50-megapixel primary camera at the back. Its 4G-only sibling also packs a 50-megapixel camera. Considering that both models sport four rear cameras in an identical layout, we expect the upcoming phone to borrow other sensors as well. This should mean a 5-megapixel ultrawide lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro camera. The front camera could be an 8-megapixel unit.

The Galaxy A23 5G may also pack a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging. Unfortunately, the rest of the specs are unknown, and so are its pricing and availability details. Samsung is likely targeting this phone in the low-cost 5G segment. We expect to hear more about it in the coming weeks as the company prepares for the phone’s unveiling. We will keep you posted.
