At Google I/O today, the company announced a new product for ad preferences. We all hate ads, but Google is an ad company, and wants to make them as unobtrusive as possible. So they are debuting the “My Ad Center” later this year. It will allow you to control what ads you see by topic and category.
The idea here is to make the ads more useful to you – which also leads to Google making more money, as advertisers can more easily get their audience. Google wants to make ads even easier for you to see.
What is the My Ad Center?
The My Ad Center will likely live within your Google account settings on your phone and on the web. It has a card-based layout that makes it easier to choose the topics that you want to see. So you can choose from things like the Energy industry, Food & Groceries, Audio Books, Health, Hybrid alternative vehicles and more.
When it comes to brands, basically any brand is available, and you can choose to see them or not to see them. The final tab is labeled as “Sensitive”. This is basically where you can limit ads for things like alcohol, gambling, pregnancy and parenting, weight loss, dating, and such. You can choose to limit them, Allow or keep them from showing at all.
My Ad Center will roll out later this year, and Google says that you’ll be able to click the three dots on an add, and choose to see more or fewer ads like that.
The idea here is sound, but it’s unlikely that many people will take the time to go through it and optimize their ad experience. Most people already tune out the ads and will likely continue to do so. But it’s a pretty cool feature to have for power users.
