The Galaxy Z Fold 4 Could Be Squarer Than Fold 3

It seems like Samsung is taking a cue from Oppo and making its Fold-series foldable a little squarer. Noted tipster Ice Universe has shared the purported display aspect ratio of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Compared to the Fold 3, both the internal and external screens on the upcoming foldable would be less tall. Perhaps the whole device would sport a squarer design.

According to the new report, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will have an internal screen aspect ratio of 6:5. The primary display on the Fold 3 had a 5:4 aspect ratio. Likewise, the external display will also be a little shorter, with the aspect ratio changing from 24.5:9 on the Fold 3 to 23:9 on the upcoming model.

Twitter user @OXIR__ has visualized these changes in a side-by-side comparison, which you can see below. It’s still not as square as the Oppo Find N (8.4:9 for the inner screen, 18:9 for the outer screen). But the new shape does make the outer screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 much more usable. Its shape is now closer to a conventional smartphone display. The current iteration is too tall for one-hand use.

Samsung may make the Galaxy Z Fold 4 squarer

Samsung has been making foldable smartphones since 2019. It has so far released three generations of foldables, improving both the hardware and software aspects of the devices with each generation. The company has hardly had any competition in the market too.

But in recent months, we have seen more firms jumping onto the foldable bandwagon, giving Samsung something to worry about. Most notably, Oppo turned a lot of heads with its Find N foldable in December 2021. The device’s near-square design was loved by many foldable enthusiasts across the world. The best part of this design is that it makes the outer screen as usable as a conventional smartphone. Even Samsung couldn’t resist praising it.

The company may now be taking a cue from it and making the Galaxy Z Fold 4 a little squarer than the Fold 3. Of course, the upcoming device isn’t going to look as squarish as the Oppo Find N, but these are welcome changes that the Korean firm is making.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected to arrive alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series in the second half of this year. With a good few months still to go, you can expect to hear a lot more about the new Samsung foldables in the build-up to their launch. We will keep you posted.
