The Galaxy Watch5 Could Have a Thermometer

The world is envious of Galaxy Watch4 owners right now. It’s March 2022, and they’re still the only watches with Wear OS 3. While this watch is the latest smartwatch offering from Samsung, the company is working on the next iteration. According to Korea IT Times, the Galaxy Watch5 could come with a built-in thermometer.

Right now, the Galaxy Watch4 has a bevy of different sensors that help you assess your health. It’s impressive that companies can fit so many sensors into such a small device, but they keep adding more. Most smartwatches and fitness trackers are judged based on how accurate their sensors are.

The Galaxy Watch5 could have a thermometer

Now, we have a report that Samsung will be adding yet another sensor. You can currently glean all sorts of information with current senors like your heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, sleep pattern, etc. Now, Samsung is looking to add your temperature to that.

The company is looking to add a built-in thermometer to the Galaxy Watch5. This makes sense, as not everyone carries around a thermometer (most people don’t even have a thermometer in their houses). This means that getting at-a-glance information about your body temperature isn’t possible at all times.

Having a thermometer attached to your wrist will be really helpful especially if you’re sick. Any rise or drop in temperature could hint at a potentially serious health problem.

There could be an issue

There’s a reason why thermometers go in your mouth, under your arms, and well, other places. They need to be in a place that has minimal exposure to the ambient temperature of your environment. This way, they can accurately measure your body temperature.

However, having a thermometer on your wrist presents an issue. Your wrist is affected by the ambient temperature, thus, measurements won’t accurately represent your body temperature. If you jog for an hour and measure your skin temperature, it’d show a temperature quite a bit higher than your true body temperature.

The company is still working on bringing the technology to life. It’ll still be a while before we see this technology, however.
