UPDATE: Microsoft has reached out to clarify the issue a bit more. The company says this is Android’s bug, and that Microsoft Teams only triggers it, wanting to clarify it’s not Microsoft’s fault. The company also said that it’s working on a fix (with Google), so that it can fix the issue even before Google releases the January update. As a reminder, the general fix for this should arrive as part of that January update by Google.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Believe it or not, Microsoft’s app is preventing some Pixel phones from calling 911. It’s a bug with Microsoft Teams, and it only happens when it’s installed on your phone, but you’re not logged in.
Microsoft’s app seems to be prevent some Pixel phones from dialing 911
This seems to be happening on the Google Pixel smartphones, and the issue is all over Reddit. The cause for this has been confirmed by Google, by the way. Google actually said that this issue seems to be present “on a small number of devices with the Microsoft Teams app installed when the user is not logged in”.
Both Google and Microsoft are working on sorting out this bug as soon as possible. Do note that it’s possible to avoid this bug, if you’re amongst the ones who experience it. Uninstall and reinstall the app, and you’re good to go.
If you’re logged into Microsoft Teams, this bug shouldn’t be present at all. You should be able to dial 911 without a problem. That is immensely odd, but there you go, it’s a thing.
A permanent fix is expected to arrive with the January Android security update
This issue has only been spotted on Pixel phones thus far. Google is planning to roll out a fix with the January Android security patch. It also aims to prevent other apps from causing the same problem, it will investigate the issue thoroughly.
Needles to say, this is a bizarre bug. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro had a ton of bugs at launch, as did their predecessors. Luckily, Google fixed most of those via updates, as it did with their predecessors.
This bug seems to be present on other Pixel phones as well, not just the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. It may not seem like a big deal, but if you need to dial 911, and you couldn’t, without knowing the issue, you probably see this as a major flaw.
Regardless, let’s hope that Google and Microsoft will figure out what the problem is, and prevent it from happening again.
