Samsung Launches LPDDR5X DRAM With 1.3x Performance Boost

Samsung LPDDR5X

Samsung has unveiled its LPDDR5X DRAM chips for smartphones and other devices. It brings efficiency and performance improvements to the company’s portfolio of high-performance DRAM chips. The company said the new LPDDR5X DRAM would bring 1.3x faster processing speeds while consuming nearly 20% less power compared to the older LPDDR5 standard.

“In recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and the metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have been rapidly expanding,” said Senior VP and Head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics, SangJoon Hwang.

“Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles.”

The new LPDDR5X modules could feature on the Galaxy S22 next year

Samsung unveiled its first 1z-based 16GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM in August last year. This DRAM chip was also included with the Galaxy S21 lineup a few months later. It was produced using the company’s 3rd generation 10nm-class (1z) process.

As for the new LPDDR5X standard, Samsung said it would work with multiple chipset manufacturers to make this the new standard across the industry. However, the company hasn’t offered details on the manufacturers involved in this effort. Samsung is using the 14nm process to mass-produce the latest LPDDR5X DRAM chips.

This DRAM module could likely debut with the Galaxy S22 in February 2022. The phone has already made multiple appearances in leaks, while we’re also learning about its hardware features. The upcoming flagship lineup will utilize Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 898 chipset, while some markets will get the Galaxy S22 with the Exynos 2200 chip.

A well-known tipster spilled the beans on the release dates of the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22 this week. The Galaxy S21 FE will reportedly break cover on January 4, 2022. It will be available a week later on January 11.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S22 will officially launch on February 8, with pre-orders starting the same day, according to the source. The phone will be available starting February 18. This confirms that the Galaxy S21 FE has delayed the release of the Galaxy S22. The latter was originally scheduled to launch in January, a year after its predecessor was unveiled.
