UPDATE: Verizon confirmed that this Pixel 6 series surprise update improves the fingerprint scanner.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: A new, surprise update has started rolling out to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro handsets. This is not a security update, as both phones are still on the November security patch. It doesn’t really come with a changelog either.

So, what is it about? Well, we’re not entirely sure, but we’re guessing Google is fixing some problems with the two phones, bugs, if you will. Considering the small size, though, it’s likely fixing a couple of issues only.

A surprise, minor update lands for the Pixel 6 series

This update weighs 14.56MB, and it’s rolling out gradually. In other words, it may arrive to you today, or in a couple of days, there’s really no rule. The update is rolling out to both global and Verizon models.

Those two updates are marked as “SD1A.210817.037” and “SD1A.210817.037.A1”, respectively. So, the one with the “A1” in the build number is for Verizon.

Now, if you’re unwilling to wait for the update to land on your phone, you can get the OTA update file now. Links for both variants are included below the article, so that you can install them manually.

A regular update is coming in less than three weeks

You will notice that this update moves the build number from “.037” to “.038”, which also suggests it’s not a big update. The next update for the two phones is planned for in less than three weeks.

We’re, of course, talking about the planned security update, which will likely bring along a bunch of bug fixes. Quite a few bugs were spotted on both devices, and Google is working hard to optimize both phones.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have been quite popular since they launched. They went out of stock rather fast, as the appealing price points really did speak to users. These two phones do have a lot to offer, not only do they come with stock Android, and unique design, but also have Google’s very first SoC on the inside, and a great camera setup.
