Google has just announced its choices for the best apps and games of 2021. These choices are officially called “Best of Awards”, and they are hand-picked by Google Play’s Editorial Team. There is also a “Users’ Choice” category, by the way. That category is based on user votes.

As per usual, there are quite a few categories that we’ll mention. There are also some new categories to talk about this year, though. Google Play expanded its Best of Awards to include apps on tablets, Wear OS and Google TV.

Another thing to note before we start, is that this list is the US-centric. In other words, most of these categories are based on the best apps from the US standpoint and for the US market. We’ll talk about some apps / games, while the rest you can check out via this link.

These are the apps Google chose as Best Apps of 2021

So, Google Play’s Editorial Team selected Balance as the Best App choice. This is a well-known app for meditation and sleep. It is aimed to improve your stress, sleep, and more, with a personalized meditation program.

This application is free to use for the first year, and it offers a great UI, which is something Google considered, of course. It is currently holding a 4.8-star rating in the Play Store, and has been downloaded over 100,000 times.

The Best Game of 2021 is… Pokémon UNITE. This is an unsurprising choice, as Pokémon UNITE managed to attract a lot of attention to itself when it launched, and it turns out it’s a great game. Its rating is “only” 4.1 stars, though, but it’s definitely worth trying out, especially if you like Pokémon.

Now, in regards to Users’ Choice for best app and game of 2021. Users voted Paramount+ as the best app, and Garena Free Fire MAX as the best game.

Those of you who are not familiar with Paramount+, is a streaming app that allows you to watch 30,000+ episodes on demand from various hit series from the network, and so on. This is a somewhat unexpected choice, but there you go. Garena Free Fire MAX is an action battle royale game which managed to become quite popular.

Best for Wear & Best for Tablets are two new categories

Best for Wear applications are Calm, MyFitnessPal, and Sleep Cycle. Calm is another app for meditation and relaxing, while MyFitnessPal is a well-known fitness app. Sleep Cycle is a sleep tracking app, and a really good one.

What about Best for Tablet apps? These are the apps that are best fit for tablets, based on Google’s choice. Various aspects have been taken into consideration, of course. The three apps chosen are Canva, Concepts, and Houzz.

Canva is an app made for design and video editing. It makes it easy to create logos, posters, and various other designs. Concepts is an app for sketching, making notes, and drawing. Houzz is a home design and remodel app, and a really compelling one at that.

The Best Indie games are 7 Billion Humans, Bird Alone, Donut County, My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge, and Puzzling Peaks EXE. On the flip side, Best for Tablet games are Chicken Police – Paint it RED!, League of Legends: Wild Rift, My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge, Overboard!, and The Procession to Calvary. As you can see, the My Friend Pedro: Ripe for Revenge is a double winner.
