Samsung's PS5-Compatible 980 Pro NVMe SSD Now Has A Heatsink

Samsung 980 Pro With Heatsink for PS5

Earlier this year Samsung confirmed that its 980 Pro NVMe SSD would officially support PS5, but it didn’t come with a heatsink. As you may be aware, when Sony announced that expandable storage was coming, it recommended using an SSD that had a heatsink for obvious reasons.

You’d think since the Samsung 980 Pro didn’t come with a heatsink, you couldn’t use it with the PS5. But on the contrary, it just meant you’d have had to buy a heatsink separately and attach it to the SSD yourself prior to installing it. Now though, you won’t have to go through that extra step should be leaning towards Samsung’s SSD for your PS5 needs.

You can buy the Samsung 980 Pro with a heatsink for your PS5 this month

Wondering when you can get your hands on one of these bad boys? You won’t have to wait long. Thankfully, Samsung is planning to launch the new SSD well before the holidays. Giving you ample time to either pick it up as a gift or just buy one for yourself.

Specifically, Samsung says that the heatsink model of the 980 Pro will be available for purchase on October 29. So there is still a couple of weeks left to wait. But if you pick one up right away, it’ll likely show up with plenty of time between now and gift giving time.

When it comes to storage capacity, there will be two options. The 1TB model and the 2TB model. Which are the same sizes that Samsung already offers. Price-wise you’re looking at $249.99 for the 1TB model. And if you want to step things up to double that, the 2TB model will cost you $449.99.

Compared to something like the 2TB WD_Black SN850 with a heatsink, that price is a tad high. This is factoring in you can find the SN850 at its normal price. As for specs, the new SSD with a heatsink comes with read speeds up to 7,000MB/s and sequential up to 5,000MB/s respectively.

So par for the course with most other SSDs that are compatible with PS5. The drive also comes with a 5-year warranty, and Samsung is packing these up in its new eco-friendly packaging. Which consists of a pulp tray inside the box instead of one made of plastic.

If you want to spend a little less, you can find the models without the heatsink here.
