Samsung is preparing to refresh its flagship Android tablet lineup with the Galaxy Tab S8 series in the coming months. Rumors have it that there will be three models — vanilla Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra. We’ve been hearing about the new tablets for some time now, with multiple leaks in the past revealing a few key details about them. Now, we have our first look at the base model of the upcoming Samsung tablet series, thanks to noted leakster @OnLeaks, who recently teamed up with Zouton.com to share a bunch of high-resolution renders and a 360-degree video of the Galaxy Tab S8.
At first glance, the Tab S8 appears almost identical to the Tab S7. It features rounded corners with flat edges and has similar-sized bezels around the display. The positioning of the physical buttons and ports is also unchanged. The only notable design difference is the location of the S Pen magnetic strip on the back. The S Pen holder doesn’t extend from the rear camera module on the new tablet. There’s a small gap now, while the Tab S7 had none.
Galaxy Tab S8 leaked specifications
Along with the renders, the new report also shared the key specifications of the Galaxy Tab S8. According to the report, the upcoming Samsung tablet will feature an 11-inch LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1600×2560 pixels resolution — unchanged from its predecessor. It will also have an identical dimension and weight. The 8,000mAh battery and 45W fast wired charging carry over unchanged as well, and so do the cameras. We will have a 13-megapixel primary camera at the back along with a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The front-facing camera is an 8-megapixel sensor.
Interestingly though, the report claims that the Galaxy Tab S8 will be powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. With the Snapdragon 898 (or whatever Qualcomm calls it) expected to arrive in a few months, the tablet should have got the newer chipset. Well, earlier reports did suggest that it will get the new Snapdragon SoC. So we’ll have to wait for more reports to confirm that.
The Galaxy Tab S8 will reportedly have a capacitive fingerprint scanner embedded into the power button, much like the preceding model. However, the renders don’t seem to suggest so. That said, the renders are also missing a few other key components, such as the pogo pins on the bottom edge. Perhaps these aren’t official renders and hence, may not be entirely accurate. The legitimacy of the leaked specs can’t be confirmed either. You can expect subsequent leaks to paint a clearer picture of the Galaxy Tab S8.
When will the Galaxy Tab S8 launch?
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7+ in August last year. So the company is well past the annual launch cycle. But an unprecedented semiconductor chip shortage has made unexpected things happen this year, such as Samsung canceling the Galaxy Note series. So it’s unclear when the Galaxy Tab S8 series will arrive. We should find out those details in the coming weeks or months. So stay tuned.
