Durability is always the main talking point with smartphones, especially foldable phones. They’ve gotten a bad reputation for being much too fragile, and that was true for the first generation. Samsung has just released the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3.  Zack from JerryRigEverything put the latter through a durability test. It seems like Samsung may have solved the foldable phone durability equation.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was put through a lot in the durability test

Both the internal and external displays were scratch tested; the internal display was marked pretty easily due to its plastic cover. Zack then tested the phone’s chassis to reveal that it’s all made of aluminum with the exception of the plastic antenna lines to let the signal in.

The ominous bend test saw Zack bending the Galaxy Z Flip 3 backward to see if it can take the strain. It was able to survive it with some slight deformation due to the antenna lines. Other than that, it was able to survive.

The dust test was the most important test of them all

The dust test is where most people had their attention. If you were following the first generation of foldable phones, you will know how much of a disaster it was. Phones from both Samsung and Huawei were experiencing critical screen failures due to particles getting under the display.

This is why the dust test is the most significant section of the video. Zack took a handful of really fine dirt and sprinkled it on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. He put some on the front, the back, and on the hinge. Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was able to survive this and the rest of the durability test.

What is this phone packing in terms of specs?

You can expect the latest and greatest specs under the hood with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It’s running the Snapdragon 888 SoC with Adreno 660 GPU. The phone maxes out at 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. That’s a bit behind the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Its internal display is a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic OLED display that supports HDR10 and a 120Hz refresh rate. This is around the rumored size of the Galaxy S22 Pro’s display. The external display is a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 12 MP main camera that can record up to 4K video at 30fps. This is paired with a 12 MP ultrawide camera with a 123-degree field of view. Keeping the lights on is a relatively small 3300 mAh battery. If you’re interested in picking one up, you can buy one for only $999 from Samsung.
