Google is announcing the arrival of a Dark theme to the desktop web version of Google.com. The feature may not appear to all users right away since it is rolling out gradually. This has been a long-sought feature for Google Search pages on desktop.
“I’m thrilled to announce that starting today & fully rolling out over the next few weeks, Dark theme is now available for Google Search pages on desktop. Thank you for all your feedback on this forum letting us know that this was a feature you wanted to see!” Google said in the announcement.
Google said the feature will finish rolling out over the coming weeks
To check if you have this option, click on Settings in the bottom right corner of the Google.com homepage. The Settings button is also visible on the top right when you’re on a results page. From here, head over to Search Settings – Appearance to find the theme options.
There’s a device default option first which matches the color scheme of your device. This is followed by Dark theme and Light theme toggles. Click save after you have made the selection to have it reflected on Google search pages.
Google began rolling out dark mode to the Android and iOS versions of Google Search in May last year. So it’s been a long wait to see these changes on the desktop version of Search.
9to5Google reports that some users are witnessing a sun icon in the top-right corner to toggle between the dark and light themes. Some may also find a banner in Search results.
This new dark theme is reportedly being tested for google.com on mobile browsers as well. However, it wasn’t mentioned in this current announcement. Moreover, some mobile users are apparently seeing a new “Dark Mode” option in the navigation drawer.
Google started testing Dark Mode for desktop search in February. So it’s been a fairly quick turnaround since then, unlike some of its mobile apps.
The company has been proactive in bringing Dark Mode to a majority of its apps, though the same can’t be said about all Google apps. For example, Google began the global rollout of the dark theme for Maps only in March this year. This is despite testing the feature since 2019.
