Samsung is hard at work on its next-gen flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S22 series. The top-of-the-line model — Galaxy S22 Ultra — has been a hot topic recently thanks to rumors that it will merge the company’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups. Leaked early renders last week also showed the device with a square footprint and an S Pen slot, reminiscent of the Note series. But what caught everyone’s attention was that oddly shaped camera housing at the back.

The renders, shared by OnLeaks, showed such an odd and asymmetrical camera housing that many people questioned the authenticity of the design. Now, another noted leakster Ice Universe has come up with a slightly different camera housing design.

The new design doesn’t relocate the camera sensors and the flash unit. However, instead of housing them all in the same camera bump, it features two separate camera bumps aligned vertically. It looks more symmetrical and realistic than the original design.

At first glance, this reminds us of the Galaxy Note 10+ rear camera layout. The difference is that we now have two separate camera housings protruding significantly out of the back panel.

Now, before we get too far, it’s worth reminding that early leaks aren’t always accurate. Ice Universe themselves aren’t confident if this is the final design, neither is OnLeaks. Moreover, both parties also suggest that Samsung has multiple prototypes of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with different frame designs as well. The original design last week showed the device with prominent volume control and power buttons. But the other design apparently features a middle frame of uniform width with less prominent physical buttons.

All this further indicates that nothing is set in stone as yet. Samsung might still be toying with the Galaxy S22 Ultra design. While the overall shape and size of the phone may not vary much from what we see in these renders, the finer elements of the design could change significantly by the time the device enters the production stage. We will let you know as and when we have more information.

When will the Galaxy S22 series launch?

With no Galaxy Note phone launching this year, Samsung fans are now early waiting for the Galaxy S22 series. The devices — Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra — are expected to go official in January next year. If early leaks and rumors are anything to go by, the latter is shaping up to be an interesting phone. Time will tell whether Samsung’s decision to merge the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S series will bear the fruits it is hoping for.
