It has been quite some time since Xiaomi announced a Mi MIX device that actually went on sale. The company probably waited for some advancements in the under-display camera department.
The Xiaomi MIX 4 is the company’s first phone with an under-display camera
That manages to differentiate this device, though that’s not the only thing it has going for it. The Xiaomi MIX 4 has a bezel-less design, essentially, and the under-display camera manages to bring out the wow factor here.
Xiaomi decided to boost the premium factor and utilize ceramic in combination with metal here. The phone’s display is curved, while its front and back sides are proportional.
Its rear camera island is placed in the top-left corner. It is rectangular, and it does protrude on the back. Xiaomi’s branding is visible on the back, in the bottom-left corner.
It has a 120Hz display, and offers bezel-less design
The Xiaomi MIX 4 features a 6.67-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) 10-bit AMOLED display. This panel does offer a 120Hz refresh rate, and 480Hz sampling rate. Dolby Vision is supported, and the panel is HDR10+ certified. It is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus.
The Snapdragon 888+ fuels this smartphone, and makes it the first Xiaomi phone with that SoC. Another first for Xiaomi is the under-display camera, as this is the first phone from the company that features it.
Xiaomi included 8GB / 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM here. The 8GB RAM model comes in both 128GB and 256GB (UFS 3.1) flavors. The 12GB RAM model will be available in 256GB and 512GB storage options.
120W fast wired charging is supported, along with 50W fast wireless charging
Android 11 comes pre-installed on the phone, along with MIUI 12.5. There are two SIM card slots included here, both of them of the nano SIM variety. A 4,500mAh battery is also included, and the phone supports insanely fast charging. 120W wired charging is supported, along with 50W wireless charging.
The device does include an in-display fingerprint scanner (optical), and an infrared sensor as well. Harman Kardon stereo speakers are included (custom 1014 linear top speaker, 1216P linear bottom speaker).
There are three cameras included on the back, and one on the front. A 108-megapixel main camera (Samsung HMX sensor, 1.6um pixel size, 4-in-1 Super Pixel, OIS, 7P lens) is backed by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera (120-degree free-form lens. 6P lens). An 8-megapixel periscope camera (5x optical zoom, 50x digital zoom, OIS) is also included here.
A 20-megapixel camera sits under the phone’s display
A single 20-megapixel camera (1.6um pixel size, 4-in-1 Super Pixel) sits on the front, under the phone’s display. Bluetooth 5.2 is also offered here, and a Type-C USB port sits at the bottom of the phone. The phone measures 162.65 x 75.35 x 8.02mm, and weighs 225 grams.
The Xiaomi MIX 4 comes in Ceramic Black, Ceramic Gray, and Ceramic White color variants. The phone’s pricing starts at CNY4,999 ($770) in China, and goes all the way up to CNY6,299 ($971) for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage option.
Do note that the phone launched in China first, though it will become available globally. Xiaomi is yet to announce its global availability, though. The phone will go on sale in China from August 16.
UPDATE: Xiaomi actually decided to ditch the ‘Mi’ branding for this device. The company did not offer an explanation as to why, at least not at the moment.
UPDATE 2: Xiaomi confirmed that the ‘Mi’ branding is going away. The change will spread to other devices moving forward.
