Samsung is starting to pick up the pace with the August 2021 Android security patch rollout. The Galaxy A52 was the first to get the new security update when the rollout began out early last week, several days before we flipped the calendar to August. The Galaxy A8 (2018), Galaxy A72, and the Galaxy S21 series joined the mid-ranger during the course of the week. Now that we have finally landed on August 2021, the latest monthly security update has arrived for the Galaxy S20 FE.
The cheapest Galaxy S20 model is currently picking up the new update in a handful of European countries. These include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Slovakia, and Switzerland, according to SamMobile. The firmware version is G780FXXU5CUG6, which suggests there could be more to this update apart from the vulnerability fixes for this month. We will let you know if there’s anything notable.
Talking about vulnerability fixes, you can expect plenty of those as well. Samsung has yet to publish the security bulletin for this month. Perhaps Google hasn’t published the latest Android security bulletin yet.
The monthly security updates for Samsung devices contain fixes from both Google as well as the Korean biggie. Called Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE), these updates fix several security flaws specific to Samsung’s custom Android skin, i.e. One UI. That’s on top of the fixes for issues found in Android OS, of course. We should get to know the details about all the vulnerability fixes that come as part of the August patch in the coming weeks.
Galaxy S20 FE gets August security update
Launched in October 2020, the Galaxy S20 is an affordable way to access flagship-grade specs and performance on Samsung devices. The device expectedly receives security updates monthly. The latest available security update is now rolling out to the affordable Galaxy flagship. If you own the device, you can expect to receive this update over the air (OTA) in the coming days and weeks.
The Galaxy S20 FE has beaten its costlier cousins to the August 2021 Android security patch. However, it shouldn’t be long before the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra also pick up the latest security maintenance release (SMR). You can expect many other eligible Galaxy models to join this party throughout this month. If you’re unsure whether your Samsung Galaxy device gets security updates monthly or quarterly, you can check here. Some older models get the update biannually, i.e. two updates in a year.
