The rage of TikTok among Millenials is not hidden from anyone. TikTok made its way to popularity as a short-video-making platform that users can share with others. However, now you will be able to make long videos on the platform as well.

According to the latest report by The Verge, TikTok will be rolling out a new feature that will allow its users to create long videos. Specifically, TikTok users can now make videos up to 3-minute long on the platform.

Although TikTok is used by billions across the globe, the content that creators share on the platform is not always watch-worthy. So, now with this long format video feature, TikTok has opened doors for users to share longer content.

Currently, TikTok allows making one-minute-long videos. With the new addition, users will get 3-times the existing limit. Besides, this would give the content creators more flexibility while filming, and not worry about the time limit.

Further, this will also help creators negate the need to share multi-part posts for their content. But, we all know, a 3-minute long video’s content needs to be solid enough to grasp the viewer’s attention.

The said 3-minute long video feature will arrive on TikTok over the coming weeks

FYI, this 3-minute long video format for TikTok was under testing since December 2020. If you are a TikTok user, you might have come across such long videos from top creators, specifically in categories like cooking.

Meaning, long video format was only available for select users until now. But over the coming weeks, TikTok plans to push this new feature for all users.

There is no word from TikTok on how the platform’s recommendation algorithm will be affected. However, as noted by The Verge, as YouTube biased its algorithm towards viewer retention, TikTok might as well follow the same rule.

Because viewer retention means creators need to create longer videos. This is the reason we see most of the videos on YouTube is over 10-minutes long now.

Again, TikTok hasn’t revealed how the algorithm will work for longer videos, but if longer videos mean high TikTok usage, we might be seeing less of those short, cringe, and viral clips on the platform.

Moreover, creators will be able not only to film, and upload 3-minute long videos, but they can also edit their long videos within TikTok itself. This also gives scope for sharing more beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, comedic sketches on the platform.
