The July 2021 Android security patch has now started rolling out to Samsung‘s Galaxy S20 FE. The LTE variant of the phone is currently picking up the new update in a handful of markets, including Russia and India. The rollout should expand to more countries in the coming days. The July security update should also be available soon for the Galaxy S20 FE 5G.

The latest update for the Galaxy S20 FE comes with firmware version G780FXXU4CUG1. It’s a 221MB download over the air (OTA). And as has been the case with the July updates for several other Galaxy devices, the official changelog doesn’t mention anything apart from the vulnerability fixes for the current month. However, judging by the build number, there could be more to it. Perhaps those Android Auto fixes that Samsung promised last month.

Nonetheless, the July security maintenance release (SMR) contains fixes for more than four dozen security vulnerabilities. Three of those are critical issues found in Android OS, while eight others are Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are software issues specific to Samsung devices.

SVE items patched include multiple high-risk vulnerabilities in the Bluetooth core protocol. These vulnerabilities could allow for impersonation attacks as well as unauthorized remote access to the authentication protocol. The issue was specific to Exynos 7570 and Exynos 980 powered devices running either Android 8 Oreo or Android 10.

Galaxy S20 FE joins Samsung’s July security update party

The Galaxy S20 FE isn’t the first Samsung phone to receive this month’s security update. As always, the Korean firm began the rollout even before we entered the new month. Over the past nine or ten days, the company has seeded the latest SMR to over a dozen Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Many more will surely join this party in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, if you own the Galaxy S20 FE, you should see a notification for the latest update over the next few days or weeks. You can also manually check for updates from your phone’s Settings app. Simply navigate to the Software update menu and tap Download and install. If an OTA update is available, you will be prompted to download it on the next screen.

The new update for the Galaxy S20 FE is only available to users in Russia, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka as of this writing. However, it shouldn’t be long before the rollout reaches other territories and comes to the 5G variant.
