The Pokémon Company has announced today that it will release its latest game in the franchise next month, Pokémon UNITE. It’s been about a year since Pokémon UNITE was officially announced, which at the time had no release date.
Technically, there’s still no release date since The Pokémon Company hasn’t listed an exact day. But it’s now clear which month the game is launching in. July.
If you’re unfamiliar with Pokémon UNITE, it’s a MOBA game where the champions are different Pokémon. This makes it the first Pokémon game in this genre, and it makes things vastly different from what most players are probably used to, at least with this franchise.
Pokémon UNITE will release in July for Nintendo Switch
The Pokémon Company has confirmed that the game will launch for Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS devices. However, the game will only be launching for Nintendo Switch next month.
The mobile version of the game will be launching a little bit later, specifically in September. In addition to the launch windows, The Pokémon Company says that cross-play between Nintendo Switch and mobile devices is planned. So once the game does launch on mobile, you can play with your friends on Switch.
This will be a free-to-start game which means you can download it at no charge. There will be optional in-game purchases though. As is the case with most free-to-play games.
Since this is a MOBA, micro transactions will probably come into play for new Pokémon to use in battle, as well as for skins and other items that be used during the match. While it’s not clear how heavy-handed these micro transactions will be, they will still be there.
When it comes to gameplay, it’s your typical standard fare for a MOBA. Level up your Pokémon during the match to increase their power and their abilities. You can give your Pokémon different looks. Battles are 5v5. And so on and so forth. So if you’ve ever played a MOBA before, then you should have an idea of what this game will be like.
