GSM Arena is reporting that Leica is seeking new smartphone partners to work with. The news comes via a tweet from a tipster on Twitter. Camera partnerships are nothing new in the smartphone market. The company recently released their OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro phones.
OnePlus partnered with Hasselblad for the cameras that are on the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. OnePlus isn’t the only manufacturer that is the business of partnering with camera makers. Other companies of note have partnered with camera makers as well.
Companies like Nokia and Sony have both partnered up with Zeiss. Those partnerships were non-exclusive deals. Even Huawei has a history with Leica. However, the tipster says that Leica is looking for partners and the company has a few candidates.
The few candidates Leica is looking at are Xiaomi, Honor, and Sharp. Similar to the Nokia and Sony partnerships the new partnership may be non-exclusive deals. In addition, it looks like Leica will continue working with Huawei.
Leica is seeking new smartphone partners but its Huawei partnership will remain
According to Leica, “The trustful and long-term technology partnership with the Huawei Consumer Business Group exists since 2015. Since the beginning, the partnership brings huge value to consumers as well as to both companies. As the cooperation still continues, the associated compliance with all confidentialities is of course preserved. The partners have agreed to secrecy about any details of the contract. Please understand that we will not be commenting on this”
Smartphone OEMs partnering with camera makers is a positive thing for both companies. The smartphone manufacturer gets to rely on the skills of a company that has expertise in optics. This can help OEMs improve their camera performance to stand out in the smartphone market.
Smartphone cameras have been evolving at a rapid pace, and the competition stays fierce. As a result, heavyweights like Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and Google continue to duke it out for camera supremacy. However, more and more manufacturers continue to make an argument to add their names to that list.
In addition, camera makers get to show off their skills which can help them sell more of their dedicated cameras. It is a mutually beneficial partnership for both parties. So Leica looking for smartphone partners makes perfect sense.
Only time will tell which company Leica inks a deal with. It could be that Leia partners with multiple OEMs which would not be too surprising. One thing can almost be for sure. That is that camera smartphones will continue to evolve thanks to partnerships like this.
