Did you know that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 copies vacuum cleaners to keep dirt out? Yeah, that sounds crazy, but according to SamMobile, it is true. Even though fans are awaiting news of the Galaxy Fold 3, Samsung has decided to share a story about its current foldable flagship.
Samsung had its work cut out when was designing the Hideaway Hinge for the Galaxy Z Flip 2. But the company knew that it had to make the same basic idea work with the larger Galaxy Z Fold 2. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a lot of different moving pieces that need to be protected from dust, dirt, grime, and more.
In an out-of-the-box moment, Samsung took inspiration from their lineup of vacuum cleaners. According to SamMobile Samsung said they went through 98 different ideas revolving around how to protect the inner workings of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
The Hideaway Hinge was updated with the sweeper mechanism to keep the inner workings safe. The sweeper is made up of fibers that are less than 1mm and it had to meet three key requirements. Firstly, it had to be durable. Very durable.
The sweeper mechanism was engineered in order to withstand 200,000 folds. That is a lot of folds. However, it makes sense when you think that a consumer will keep their Fold 2 for years to come. Secondly, the sweeper has to maintain its elasticity. Lastly, it had to be small. The sweeper had to be small enough in order to not compromise the design of the device.

With this out-of-the-box type of thinking Samsung was able to create a device that is successful. The original model had issues with keeping dirt and dust out. The Galaxy Fold 2 is leaps and bound better at keeping dirt and dust from getting inside the device.
Of course, though nothing is perfect. The Galaxy Fold 2 still gets dirt and dust inside of it. Some owners have reported the hinge getting stuck or clogged up. But, the improvements that Samsung made from the Galaxy Fold to Galaxy Fold 2 really made a difference.
With the Galaxy Z Fold 3 on the way, it is no doubt that Samsung will make some improvements again. The engineers had to think outside of the box to improve the Galaxy Fold 2’s protection against dirt. It will be interesting to see what they do next. The world does know that the Galaxy Fold 3 will have an IP rating. So clearly the company is making improvements to the builds of their foldable devices.
