Sony has announced two new flagships today, along with a mid-range smartphone. Sony announced the Xperia 1 III, Xperia 5 III, and Xperia 10 III. The first two phones stole the show, of course, and those are the two phones we’ll talk about in this article.
The Sony Xperia 1 III & Xperia 5 III are the company’s brand new flagship offerings
The Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III are both flagship-grade smartphones, the only question is what size do you prefer. The Xperia 1 III is a large smartphone, and technically the most powerful one. The Xperia 5 III brings power in a smaller package.
These are the first smartphones in the world to include a variable telephoto lens
What makes these two phones stand out is their camera setup. They come with the world’s first variable telephoto lens, which is paired with a dual PD sensor. They also offer real-time eye autofocus for humans and animals, newly equipped real-time tracking, and fast and accurate continuous autofocus across all lenses.
Sony also confirmed that 20fps Burst Mode with low light noise reduction is also included, and it’s powered by BIONZ X. Speaking of cameras, both smartphones come with three 12-megapixel cameras on the back. The Xperia 1 III also includes a 3D ToF camera back there.
The main camera on the Xperia 1 III includes an f/1.7 aperture lens, and it can record 4K videos at 120 FPS. A 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera (f/2.2 aperture) is also included, along with a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with a folded lens design. On the front, you’ll find an 8-megapixel selfie camera.
The Xperia 5 III includes basically the same camera setup, but without the periscope functionality of the telephoto lens. It’s also worth noting that ZEISS T coating is included on both camera setups. The same 8-megapixel camera from the Xperia 1 III is included on the front here.
The Snapdragon 888 SoC fuels both devices
Both smartphones are fueled by the Snapdragon 888 SoC. The Xperia 1 III includes 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The Xperia 5 III comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB / 256GB of internal storage.
The Sony Xperia 1 III features a 6.5-inch CinemaWide 4K HDR OLED display (21:9), with a 120Hz refresh rate. The Xperia 5 III, on the other hand, sports a 6.1-inch fullHD+ CinemaWide 120Hz HDR OLED display (21:9).
Sony made some improvements in the audio department as well. It has introduced support for 360 Reality Audio, while 3.5mm headphone jacks are included on both smartphones.
30W wired charging is included
Both devices sport a 4,500mAh battery on the inside, and support 30W wired charging. Sony says that it takes 30 minutes to charge both devices up to 50-percent. There’s no word on wireless charging.
Both phones will become available in the Summer
The Sony Xperia 1 III will be offered in Frosted Black and Frosted Purple color variants. The Xperia 5 III will be available in Black and Green colors. Android 11 will come pre-installed, and the two phones will become available in the Summer. Do note that price tags are still unknown.
