According to XDA-Developers, your next Android TV set-top box could double as a Google Assistant smart speaker. Google Assistant on Android TV makes sense when you think about it. Google Assistant is on phones, tablets, watches, smart speakers, smart doorbells, and more. The same goes for Android TV which is on TVs, set-top boxes, and even projectors.
So combining these two pieces of software makes total sense. To clarify, you can use Google Assistant on an Android TV via a button on the remote. But, you can’t generally summon it via voice like you would on your phone.
There is one device that combined the two effectively, but it wasn’t well received. @AndroidTV_Rumor on Twitter noticed that SEI Robotics has a new smart speaker in store. The speaker in question will be the first Google Assistant smart speaker with Android TV built-in.
The company usually makes devices for other companies. What that means is they make white label products. They make them but do not put their branding on them. In keeping with that tradition, the company is making the FPT Play Box for Vietnamese telecom company FPT Telecom.
The FPT Play Box will have a puck design that isn’t completely original. It will be bigger than a traditional Google Assistant smart speaker but not by much. That means it will still be able to fit neatly and discretely on a table.
Google Assistant on Android TV with voice commands is the FPT Play Box party trick
As for the specs, it will have an Amlogic S905X3 processor, 16GB of storage, and 2GB of RAM. But, in order to make the “Hey Google” hot word work, it also has two far-field microphones. Without that users would not be able to summon the Google Assistant with their voice.
There are a couple of oddities about this upcoming device though. Firstly, is the fact that users most likely will not be able to get this outside of Vietnam which isn’t terribly surprising. The second oddity is that it has Android TV on it.
To clarify this, Google is pretty strict on what devices are Android TV certified. Google wants to make sure that devices using their software are legit. However, Google is beginning to certify smart speakers with Android TV. As a result, it is easier to put Android TV on here rather than some custom skin.
Hopefully, more devices like this will come to market. Convenience is always a good thing. Even though pressing a button to summon Google Assistant isn’t too much work, wouldn’t you rather be able to summon it with your voice. Like a wizard? Only time will tell if more devices like the FPT Play Box pop up.
