Bullitt Group, the global licensee for Cat® phones, is launching the Cat S62 Pro for the US market. Cat series of phones are synonymous with rugged smartphones. We at AndroidHeadlines have reviewed a few of the Cat smartphones in the past.

The Cat S62 Pro is the latest device launching in the USA. The headline-grabbing feature of this rugged smartphone is that it has a very high-resolution FLIR Lepton 3.5 sensor. The very capable sensor along with the new  MyFLIR™ Pro app should enable the Cat S62 Pro to be useful in a lot of different harsh work environments.

The Cat S62 Pro was first released in Europe in 2020. Apparently, it seems to have done well there to warrant a launch in the USA. The unique FLIR thermal camera along with the adjustable settings and the MyFLIR Pro app seems to be fueling the sales of the Cat S62 Pro as the ultimate thermal phone.

This is the third generation of the thermal Cat phone and the Lepton 3.5 sensor provides significant improvements over the previous devices.

The S62 Pro can detect minute temperature differences due to improved sensitivity. This results in a 4x increase in the number of thermal pixels over its predecessor. With the increase in thermal sensitivity and an upgraded MyFLIR app, users can now access FLIR Systems VividIR™ image processing, enhanced MSX® (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging), and visible-to-thermal alpha blending technologies all integrated into their smartphone.

According to the press release, the Cat S62 Pro allows users to vary the intensity of MSX. It does so by overlaying visual outline detail from the picture onto the thermal image. In addition, the new alpha blending feature combines thermal detail with the photo output from the Sony dual-pixel camera sensor.

Bullitt Group claims that these upgrades deliver enhanced image quality, and higher thermal resolution to help professionals make better decisions since they now have greater context in terms of thermal and photographic data. Of course, all of this happens in real-time within the new MyFLIR app. And since the functionality is built into a smartphone, you can quickly share this data for further analysis. Or for that matter get on a conference call to help resolve a developing situation.

There are potential work scenarios where temperature monitoring is crucial – like cold storage for Covid-19 vaccines! The Cat S62 Pro has a built-in alarm that lets users monitor a custom temperature range anywhere between -4°F to +752°F. And can add an alert when it observes data either within a range or outside it.  This can be useful when watching for machinery to reach a specified temperature or even at home to check if you can start grilling that steak once it is up to temperature.

As a smartphone released in 2020, specs might seem a bit on the low end. Despite that shortcoming, this smartphone does feature the latest FLIR sensor technology. So in that sense, it is quite up to par for the main task at hand. It has a 5.7” FHD+ (18×9) display, Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB RAM / 128GB storage, a fingerprint sensor, and a 4,000 mAh battery.

Since this is a rugged phone it is easy to clean with soap or a disinfectant (no issues with bleach or sanitizers). Cleaning and disinfection of smartphones is a hot topic these days in a post-Covid-19 world. As usual, the phone has IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water ingress so no worries if you dunk your phone in water by accident or work at a dusty construction site. It is certified to meet the Mil-Spec 810H. So it should be able to survive repeated drops, extreme temperature changes, shock, and vibration too.

Some key Specifications of the Integrated FLIR thermal camera

These specifications include a Lepton 3.5 professional-grade camera with 1440 x 1080 HD output with VividIR. MSX linear overlay from the visual camera and a measurable temperature range of -4°F to 752°F.

It picks up heat and measures surface temperatures from a distance of up to 30m. In addition, it has scalable and movable regions of interest with ‘hottest’ and ‘coldest’ indicators.

The horizontal field of vision (FOV) is expanded to 57 degrees to capture more of the scene. There are nine thermal color palettes to choose for the output depending on the situation. And last you can get the output via PDF for easy sharing.
