Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! is an endless runner game for mobile devices featuring Crash Bandicoot and other familiar franchise characters. And it just released on Android and iOS this week. Initially intended to launch today, March 25, it showed up on the Play Store one day prior.
The endless runner game is a free-to-play title developed by King, now owned by Activision, and mashes together the iconic Crash Bandicoot franchise with the popular Temple Run formula that popularized the genre almost a decade ago (it’ll be exactly ten years since it’s release on August 4 of this year).
Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! may just be getting its global release this week, but it’s actually been available in soft launch in a handful of regions for about a year. Now everyone gets to enjoy it.
Crash Bandicoot as an endless runner is more fun than you’d think
Yes it’s a free-to-play game and yes it was developed by King – the makers of Candy Crush. A game which is well-known for its addictive gameplay and copious amounts of micro transactions. So one might think that Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! would be a waste of time.
Well that may be true for some. But it’s a lot more fun than many people might think. It’s also only been out for a day and already has more than 1 million installs, and a 4.6 star rating. Which is, not bad at all. The original Crash Bandicoot games that launched on PlayStation sort of play like an endless runner too. So to be quite honest the gameplay mechanics fit quite nicely.
You get to play as Crash from the start, as you would expect. However, you can unlock more playable characters through gameplay and in-game purchases. There’s also a story attached to the game and it includes everything from boss fights to power-ups to keep you running from level to level.
Even if it ends up being nothing more than a fun way to pass time every once in a while, it’s well worth it.
Customize your look, play with friends and more
In addition to everything else it already offers, there’s at least some level of multiplayer content. King refers to it as asynchronous multiplayer. Allowing you to race against your friends to see who had the best times and farthest distances to become the overall winner.
Because who doesn’t love a little bit of bragging rights every now and again. You can also customize Crash’s look with different outfit pieces. Though expect some of these to be locked behind paywalls.
If you’re willing to give the game a try, and you should if you’re a fan of the franchise, you can grab it from the Play Store button below.
