Or rather one that it’s already working on and plans to deliver for its first title. This will be Amazon’s fourth game studio to date. The other three, which are all still operable and staffed, reside in Seattle, San Diego, and Orange County.
One of which works on New World, Amazon’s upcoming MMORPG. More than anything else right now, Amazon’s further commitment to game development showcases the determination it has for the craft. As well as how much money Amazon really has to throw at game development as a future revenue stream. Especially when you compare Amazon Games to Google’s Stadia Games & Entertainment. Which was just shut down in early 2021.
Amazon’s fourth game studio is working on an online multiplayer game
Amazon doesn’t give a whole lot of detail about the game, but it’s possible Amazon is looking for it to fill the void that was left by Crucible. Amazon’s now defunct online multiplayer shooter. It had a brief lifespan in beta before being pulled from Steam and tucked away in a dark corner never to be heard from again.
While Amazon doesn’t state this new title from the Montreal studio is that type of game, there are some hints. The Montreal studio is working on a game currently, and it’s focus is on new AAA experiences. It’s also an online multiplayer game.
Lastly, it seems that more than a few of the developers worked on Rainbow Six Siege. Developers that specialize in working on an online multiplayer shooter now working on a AAA game title for Amazon? Sounds like a new shooter game. And if it is, maybe this time around Amazon intends for the game to stick.
Attack on many fronts
Amazon isn’t just diving headfirst into internal game development. It’s also stepping foot into the publishing world. Though not necessarily new information, Amazon reiterates in today’s announcement that it’s working as a publisher for an external game being developed by Smilegate RPG.
The only game developed by Smilegate RPG that isn’t already available in Western countries, like the US, is Lost Ark. A highly anticipated MMO Action RPG that looks and feels a little bit like Diablo, but with MMO elements and a large online community.
So in addition to a new internal game studio focused on AAA game development, Amazon is also wading into the waters of game publishing. To help expand the reach of popular international titles. Not to mention it’s continuing ahead with Luna. It’s cloud gaming platform.
Amazon is in gaming for the long haul. Google should take notes.
