It seems like Google has big plans for the Pixel 6, at least according to new information. XDA’s Mishaal Rahman found a rather interesting string of code in Android 12 Developer Preview 1. That code seems to point towards an in-display fingerprint scanner and Face Unlock for the Google Pixel 6.

The code seems to mention enrolling in fingerprint unlock and Face Unlock. It says “Make unlocking your phone a breeze”, “Save time unlocking phone in your pocket”, ad “Unlock your phone securely with your face and fingerprint”.

There’s no guarantee that the Google Pixel 6 will offer an in-display fingerprint scanner & face unlock, but…

Now, there is no guarantee that the Pixel 6 will offer either of these, but it’s highly likely. Android 12 may finally offer native support for in-display fingerprint scanners, and those optimistic of us would even say that under-display face unlock tech is possible.

Apple did submit a patent for something like that recently, so it is in the company’s plans. Google is probably looking to implement something similar, but it remains to be seen when will that happen.

The Google Pixel 5 is the most powerful smartphone that Google announced last year, and that phone comes with a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact, a lot of people prefer capacitive fingerprint scanners.

Google seems to be looking to modernize its phones, though. The Google Pixel 6 series will likely include an in-display fingerprint scanner. It remains to be seen what will happen with the Face Unlock, though.

Google’s Pixel phones did sport advanced facial scanning a while back

Google did offer such tech with the Pixel 4 series, but decided to remove it with the Pixel 5. If it makes a comeback with the Pixel 6, let’s hope it won’t add a huge bezel above the display, or a nasty-looking notch.

In any case, let’s hope that Google’s next implementation of facial scanning will work better than it did before. As a reminder, the Google Pixel 6 series is expected to arrive in Q3 or Q4. The Pixel 5 launched on September 30 last year.
