Roku has announced that it was the best-selling smart TV OS in the US, last year. With 38% of the market share in the US and 31% of the market share in Canada.
This comes from data that was collected from January 5 to December 26, 2020. And it shows that Samsung and its Tizen OS has dropped from the number one spot.
The success of Roku TVs is likely thanks to the vast app catalog, and the availability of Roku. TCL has quickly made a name for itself as one of the best Roku TV makers. Having many different TVs available, all of which run on the Roku platform.
Expect more third-party Roku soundbars in 2021
Along with that announcement, Roku announced partners for its “Roku TV Ready” program. Which is going to allow for wireless soundbars to work with TVs. Bringing Roku to your TV without buying a HDMI dongle. Currently, only Roku makes these soundbars, but that will soon change.
These Roku TV soundbars connect to the TV over WiFi. You won’t have any issues with latency though, since it is communicated through hardware devices. Which ensures a good A/V synchronization. Basically the way it works is, Roku will choose what needs to be inside the soundbar for it to work, and then leaves other choices for its partners. That includes the enclosure design, drivers and speakers, and so forth.
Element is joining the Roku TV Ready program, and is going to be releasing a 2.0 soundbar and a 2.1 soundbar subwoofer combo later this year.
The Roku TV Ready program will be rolling out to other countries and made available to other partners in the future.
This is going to allow you to get a nice soundbar for your TV, and not need to worry about getting a Roku dongle for your TV to get some smarts into your TV. Or needing to buy a new TV in the first place.
