As it turns out, the best SpongeBob game known to humankind is coming out on mobile this year. It's called SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. Any mega popular TV show or movie franchise ends up getting at least one or two games. SpongeBob is no exception here.
There are already a fair number of SpongeBob-themed games on Android. The most recent one being SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off, which is a simulation/time management game where your main goal is to keep the patrons of the Krusty Krab happy by ensuring they get a high-quality meal.
One major difference though is that the new game won't be free. Whereas all the other mobile games based on the franchise are.
The best SpongeBob game on mobile won't be free
There's a love-hate relationship for people with free-to-play mobile games. Free games on Android and iOS get a bad rap because they often come riddled with micro transactions and ads.
Pay-to-win mechanics that reward you with either game progression or overpowered items for spending real-life money are another thing that people despise about free-to-play games. Which is why it's usually a pretty big deal when a big franchise like SpongeBob ends up getting a premium game.
In the case of Battle For Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, this was a game that was initially released for consoles back in 2003. So its mobile debut is a remastered version of the game with slightly more high-definition visuals and a retrofit to be played on touchscreen devices.
It also comes with a $10 price tag. There's no confirmation yet on if there will be any in-game purchases at all, but usually there isn't with paid games.
Coming this year but there's no firm date
The game's mobile publishers, Handy Games, have released a trailer for the upcoming title launch. But it has not yet mentioned a firm release date.
It will be coming out on Android and iOS sometime in 2021. But seeing as how 2021 just started, "sometime" could always mean near or far. There's a lot of time left in 2021 after all.
The good news is that if you're awaiting this game's release, you can pre-register for it right now both on Google Play and iOS. In doing so, you'll be alerted to the game's availability usually the moment it comes out.
The game will come with touch controls, but it will also support mobile gamepads if you prefer to play your mobile games that way.
