Do you have a smartphone that you wish took better pictures? Well with the new Google Camera 8.1 mod based on Google’s Pixel 5 camera app you can get that. Google’s Pixel phones have always been at the top of the smartphone camera world. Google’s exceptional work with computational photography has allowed the Pixel phones to swing will above their weight class.

XDA-Developers has announced that XDA senior member Urnyx05 has released this latest Google Camera mod. These mods allow devices that are supported to use the same camera app that is seen on the Pixel devices. With the release of the Google Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4a 5G came version 8.0 of the Google Camera App.

That release came with a new UI and a few new features. These features and new UI finally came to older Pixel devices with the release of version 8.1 last month. One of the new features is the new “Storage Saver” mode which helps users take more photos and videos. This is a great feature considering Google is discontinuing their free unlimited high-quality photo storage.

But what if you don’t own a member of the Google Pixel family? No need to worry because the mod from XDA brings these features and changes to non-Pixel devices. Not only will you get the new “Storage Saver” mode and the new UI, but you will get more features as well.

The complete changelog for the latest GCam mod lists all of the changes. These changes added all the fixes necessary for the first start, added color transform to fix saturation on devices with dull colors, added an option to disable tracking focus, added an option disable motion photos, adding OPModes to fix EIS, added buttons in the drop-down menu to enable/disable AWB, disabled Sabre on unsupported sensors, added an option to choose between Pixel 2, Pixel 3, IMX586 and IMX686 AWB, improved colors on the Mi Note 10, added an option to disable synthetic fill flash, and finally added an option to disable auto night sight on portrait and photo.

That is a long list of improvements that will improve the performance of the app for non-Pixel devices. Now the Google Camera 8.1 mod should work on most Pixel and non-Pixel devices according to the original announcement. However, a few Snapdragon 845 devices, Samsung and OnePlus phones may not work with this mod
