It seems like the Google Pixel 5 chipset is not as fast as it should be. This information comes from GSM Arena, who did some further tests on it. Just to be clear, we’re talking about the Snapdragon 765G, which is used here.

During the review period, GSM Arena thought that the Pixel 5 unit was faulty, so it requested a new one. The second one performed the same, so it simply confirmed what was initially suspected.

The Google Pixel 5 chipset disappoints in multi-core and GPU tests

The Snapdragon 765G did really well in the single-core CPU tests. Where it stumbled is the multi-core scores, and the GPU test as well. It’s actually much closer to the Snapdragon 710 in terms of raw performance, notes the source.

Folks over at GSM Arena even tried to cool down the device while testing, just to rule out thermal throttling. Well, that didn’t help, which basically verified the findings.

It seems like Google simply wanted 5G connectivity, and it took an okay chip to deliver that. The Snapdragon 765G also has an integrated 5G modem, unlike the Snapdragon 865, so there are power efficiency benefits here.

Google probably decided to downclock the small cores and GPU, or use a very aggressive governor on this phone. It is quite possible that battery life is taking considerable priority over performance, which is why the device delivers such results.

It’s trailing behind the OnePlus Nord, a phone with the same SoC

It is delivering poorer scores than some phones with inferior chips. As you can see in the graphs below, the Pixel 5 is trailing behind the OnePlus Nord, considerably. Both phones come with the same processor, so that’s very odd.

This is not something that should worry you, though, at least not yet. The Google Pixel 5 performs admirably, even when it comes to games. That will change in time, maybe sooner than it should due to such changes by Google, but for the time being, the performance is excellent.

Whatever Google did also benefits the phone’s battery life, considerably. The Google Pixel 5 delivers excellent battery life. The results will satisfy even the most hardcore users. If you’d like to know more, check out our full review.
