Samsung launched two pairs of true wireless earbuds (TWS) in 2020. The Galaxy Buds+, which are essentially an improved version of the original Buds from last year, came out with the Galaxy S20 series early in the year. The company then followed them with the Galaxy Buds Live that launched alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series in August.
Now it appears Samsung is working on a new pair of TWS buds that might arrive with the Galaxy S21 series in a couple of months. The company is also seemingly adopting yet another change in nomenclature for its upcoming earbuds. The Korean conglomerate has filed trademark applications for "Galaxy Buds Beyond" in several regions, suggesting such a development.
The new trademark filing has been spotted on the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Samsung submitted the application on October 29th and it covers the same use cases as earlier Galaxy Buds models.
It goes without saying that a trademark application doesn't reveal anything else about the device itself apart from its moniker. So no other details about Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Buds Beyond are available as of now.
Samsung files trademark for Galaxy Buds Beyond
The two pairs of TWS buds that Samsung launched this year – Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Buds Live – are essentially two distinct products that cater to different types of people. They come in completely different shapes and designs. While the former offers silicone tips for a better fit, the bean-shaped Buds Live sport an open-ear fit design.
The two buds also differ in the feature set they offer. Only the Galaxy Buds Live comes with active noise canceling (ANC) technology. In fact, these are the first Samsung TWS earphones to offer ANC. So the upcoming Buds Beyond could be an ideal opportunity for the company to add ANC into the existing tight-fit design of the Galaxy Buds while making other minor design and performance improvements. After all, the Galaxy Buds+ aren't the best pair of TWS earphones you could buy now.
That said, it's still very early, and a trademark application doesn't necessarily confirm that Buds Beyond are coming anytime soon. The Buds Live are still very capable earphones. Samsung could offer them as a pre-order gift with the Galaxy S21. However, if the Galaxy Buds Beyond are indeed planned for a January 2021 launch alongside the Galaxy S21 series, then it shouldn't be too long before more details about them start popping up.
