It has emerged that Spotify will now let users search by lyrics within its app. This was initially announced informally Spotify’s Lin Wang on Twitter.

Android Police argue that this informal announcement demonstrates that the feature landed recently. This marks another feature added to the platform amongst others the company has worked on in recent weeks.

Back in August, it emerged that there was a ‘Virtual Events’ feature under development in the app. Little is known about this new element but it seems exciting.

Just a few weeks ago, Spotify also announced it was working on a whole host of new features. Things included group sessions, a karaoke mode as well as others.

This new lyrics search feature in the Spotify app seems to have flown under the radar somewhat. However, for many, it will be a welcome innovation.

Spotify adds the ability to search by lyrics

Given the slightly haphazard and informal nature of the announcement, it is not yet clear the state of this feature in terms of its rollout. A number of users have found that it is live for them. However, there is no official word from Spotify on the matter.

For those that have the feature, you can simply search for a set of lyrics in the search function. When you do this, the words “lyrics match” will feature next to relevant results, as shown on the above screenshot.

Reportedly the desktop client already had this feature. However, until now the mobile version was left without it. Although it seems that not many people actually knew about this.

We know that the feature is live for people with version 8.5.78.909 on Android. However, it is certainly possible that there could be a server-side component. It may also have rolled out on an earlier release but without our knowledge.

Generally speaking, this should help quite a lot of people in finding songs they do not necessarily know the title of. Imagine you have listened to a song on the radio or in a restaurant, this feature will come in handy.

Most people now have access to apps that can listen for songs and tell you the title. However, there are still occasions, like when driving or in a loud place, that this does not work. Therefore, this new feature will certainly have its value for users.

As mentioned, we have no firm details as to when it will roll out completely, or if it already has. However, expect it to become live for you if it has not already in the near future.
