Lenovo Is Launching A New Android-Based Standalone VR Headset

Lenovo apparently has a new VR headset coming that provides a standalone experience. It’s an all-in-one unit which Lenovo reportedly worked with Pico Interactive to create. Which makes sense given Pico makes its own standalone VR headsets.

Lenovo’s headset is called the Lenovo Mirage VR S3, and it’s powered by Android. It doesn’t run Daydream software like Google’s headsets, but it does probably have access to the Play Store and its collection of VR apps.

The Android software at least would seem to suggest as much. It also comes with a single stick-shaped controller that is reminiscent of every other headset meant for mobile.


Lenovo will release its standalone VR headset in Q3

Though it’s always possible things could change, Lenovo’s suggested release window is sometime in Q3 for this headset.

Sometime in Q3 is a wide-open three-month time frame. So there’s a lot of room in there for it to be released at any point. But for those interested this gives a general time frame of when to possibly expect it to land in stores. Even if those stores are only online.

There’s also no price tag that’s been announced yet. But, given that this is an all-in-one option based on Android, it’s not likely you’ll need to start saving now to get one. Expect it to be priced somewhere around $250 or less. Which is not super cheap but it’s also nowhere near the cost of something like the Oculus Quest.


The point is that it should be somewhat affordable if you’re looking for an entry point into the world of VR.

Powered by Qualcomm and likely meant for the non-consumer market

According to the report the headset is probably not going to be meant for the consumer market.

Instead, Lenovo may be targeting businesses and education programs for this hardware. The company is said to be advertising that it would be useful in numerous different industries including oil and gas, construction, and engineering.


It even supports Lenovo’s VR Education platform called VR Classroom 2. As for hardware, it’s using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. A top-end mobile processor from a few years ago.

It also has 64GB of internal storage for apps, a 4,200mAh-capacity battery, Bluetooth 5.0 support, and two 5.5-inch displays that each support a resolution of 2,160 x 1,920.

While the headset itself is powered by a rechargeable battery, the controller that comes with it takes AAA batteries. So users will need to swap these out every so often.
