OnePlus 8 Series Confirmed To Support 30W Wireless Charging

Everyone's dreams have come true, the OnePlus 8 series will support wireless charging.

The company's CEO, talked with The Verge last week and confirmed to the publication that the new "ultra flagship" will support wireless charging. And it will charge at up to 30W. That's pretty freaking fast, considering traditional wireless charging is only about 5W.

OnePlus says that it will be able to give you 50% charge in about 30 minutes. That's faster than some wired charging for phones like the Pixel 4.

OnePlus said it'd bring wireless charging once it was worthwhile

OnePlus continued to say that it would only bring wireless charging to its devices when it was worthwhile and not a trade off for its customers.

Basically, what OnePlus meant was the charging speed. But also the size of the coils that need to be inside the phone for wireless charging. At 5W and even 10W, wireless charging is still fairly slow. But at 30W, it's much faster and actually worth having as a feature.

Now because OnePlus is one of the few doing 30W wireless charging – OPPO, Xiaomi and Huawei are also doing it – they needed to create their own wireless charger. One that is capable of 30W.

Keep in mind that it is going to need to be better than a traditional wireless charger, because it is going to put out more heat at that speed. And thus the wireless charging stand does have a fan. OnePlus says that it will get as loud as 30 dB. Which isn't too bad, but keep in mind that it's doing a lot of work.

Warp Charge 30 Wireless

OnePlus did need to make some changes to how wireless charging works, to be able to get to this speed, safely.

Essentially, it changed around the traditional Amps x Volts = Watts equation. The voltage is increased to 20B with amps at 1.5. Inside the OnePlus 8 series smartphones, there are "isolated charge pumps" that reduce the voltage back down to something that's safe to pump into the battery.

This is what is being called "Warp Charge 30 Wireless". Using that same branding for its wired fast charging. Which makes sense for OnePlus, but it does sound kind of clunky when you add "Wireless" to the name.

The OnePlus 8 Series is going to be announced next week, on April 14. We are expecting to see a OnePlus 8 and a OnePlus 8 Pro make its way on stage at its virtual event next week.
