It's been a few years since Motorola has done anything big at Mobile World Congress, but this year at MWC 2020, the smartphone maker is actually holding a press conference at the biggest mobile show of the year.
Motorola has started sending out invites for its press conference at Mobile World Congress, which will actually take place the day before the event officially kicks off – like usual. And it is likely that they will be announcing a flagship smartphone. Considering it has announced mid-range and budget Moto G and Moto E smartphones at MWC before, without a press conference.
It'll take place on February 23 at 7PM CEST, for those that are interested in seeing what Motorola is cooking up in 2020.
Motorola promised a flagship smartphone in 2020
Not only has Motorola not done much at MWC in the past few years, but it also hasn't announced a true flagship smartphone in a few years either. Last year, the closest it got to a flagship was the Moto Z4. Which was really a mid-range device with an older chipset. It was also under $500. But the main reason why that phone was announced, was so that it could sell the 5G Moto Mod for Verizon.
Motorola said at the end of last year, that it would be returning to the flagship market in 2020. Though we didn't expect it to be so early in 2020.
While we do love Motorola's entry-level and mid-range devices, it is going to be interesting to see what the company does when it comes to a flagship. Especially since it has the new razr that is coming out next month as well. Though that is also technically a mid-range foldable smartphone from the company.
It's likely that the razr was why Motorola didn't release a flagship in the past couple of years, as it had been working on that razr for a few years.
Mobile World Congress is where Motorola can really shine
If done right, Motorola can steal the show at MWC 2020 next month.
This is because many of the bigger name companies are doing their own thing, outside of MWC. While Motorola will be there to showcase its latest and greatest products. So it can steal the spotlight from some of its main competitors, seeing as they would rather do their events before or after MWC.
For example, Huawei won't be announcing the P40 series at MWC. That will happen at an event in Paris likely in either March or April. Samsung, on the other hand is announcing the Galaxy S20 about two weeks before Mobile World Congress. However, LG doesn't have any plans right now. So there's not a lot of competition so far at MWC, for attention.
But, Motorola needs to announce a phone that is worth that attention. If it's just another cookie-cutter smartphone, then it will have wasted that spotlight that it is getting. But we'll find out when Motorola announces this phone on February 23.
Update: An earlier version of this article indicated that Motorola confirmed it was announcing a flagship device at MWC next month. That has not been confirmed yet.
