Motorola has announced its very first foldable handset, the Motorola Razr. This handset has been leaking for a while now, and recently quite a few images of the device surfaced. Well, it seems like those images were spot on.
Motorola Razr is a modern take on the classic RAZR V3
The company announced the phone, and it sure does bring back memories. The device is a modern take on the original Motorola RAZR V3 which was announced back in 2004. That was a regular cellphone, but a really good one.
The Motorola RAZR V3 managed to become popular straight away, and is, until this day, one of the company's most iconic smartphones. Having that in mind, it's not that surprising that Motorola decided to revive it as a foldable smartphone.
This is a smartphone that folds into a phone, not a tablet that folds into a smartphone
The new Motorola Razr is one of the very few foldable smartphones in the market at the moment, and many would say it's the best-looking one. Unlike other foldables, this handset is not trying to be a tablet that folds into a smartphone. It's a smartphone that folds into a phone.
The phone features a 6.2-inch 2142 x 876 Cinemavision pOLED display when it's unfolded. That display has an aspect ratio of 21:9, just like Sony's latest smartphones. The Motorola Razr has a smaller display on the outside, when it's folded, similar to the original RAZR V3.
That smaller display measures 2.7 inches, and we're looking at a resolution of 600 x 800 here. This display has an aspect ratio of 4:3, and it's a gOLED display protected by Gorilla Glass 3.
Motorola created a rather interesting hinge mechanism for this device
Motorola claims that its hinge mechanism allows the phone to close with both sides perfectly flush. The company says that this will help protect the display, and that it allowed the company to make it as thin as possible.
The phone's outer display allows you to respond to notifications, control your music player, take selfies, activate Google Assistant… and more. All that without the need to unfold the device. This is a touch-sensitive display, of course.
It can even become a classic RAZR V3 via an included easter egg
The phone even comes with a rather fun easter egg that you'll find buried in the settings. You can actually turn the phone into a classic RAZR V3. Its large display on the inside will essentially become the classic RAZR V3, with a regular T9 keyboard and everything. You will even be able to use it in that mode, for fun.
The new Motorola Razr is not the most powerful foldable out there, though. This phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 710 64-bit octa-core processor. That is a solid mid-range chip, but it's not the Snapdragon 855, or anything of the sort.
The Motorola Razr is equipped with 6GB of RAM, and a rather small battery
The device includes 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of storage. Android 9 Pie comes pre-installed on it, while a 2,510mAh battery is included on the inside. That battery does seem to be quite small for this phone, especially if you plan on using the phone unfolded for most of the time. We'll see how it does in a full review, though. You do get 15W TurboPower fast charging here as well.
This phone actually has two cameras. It has a 16-megapixel (Sony's IMX519 sensor, f/1.7 aperture, 1.22um pixel size, EIS, Dual Pixel autofocus, Laser AF) main camera, and a 5-megapixel (f/2.0 aperture, 1.12um pixel size) selfie shooter.
The phone's main camera can actually be used for taking selfies as well, when the phone is folded, as it's placed on the upper portion of the device's back. The Motorola Razr supports 4G LTE with VoLTE, and it comes with Bluetooth 5.0. A 3.5mm headphone jack is not included, unfortunately.
A display crease was not visible on demo units, which is a good sign
This device does have a fingerprint scanner as well. A regular, capacitive fingerprint scanner is located on the phone's chin. It is also worth saying that the phone folds right down the middle, and the crease was not visible on the demo units. The phone is also splash-proof, and it has four microphones.
The Motorola Razr was announced in a single color, Noir Black. The phone will become available for pre-order exclusively from Verizon in the US on December 26. You'll be able to get it for $62.49 per month for 25 months on Verizon Device Payment or $1,499.99 without a contract. The phone will become available for purchase in retail stores and via Verizon's website on January 9.
The Motorola Razr will be available in the US, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America
Motorola said that it will be available via its official website as well sometime in January 2020, and at select Walmart locations. The phone will become available in Europe as well, in select markets. The company did not reveal when exactly will it happen, but we do know that it will occur in December. The device will also become available in Asia, Australia, and Latin America in the future.
