The OnePlus 8 series announcement is still months away, and yet some new info surfaced. According to new information that reared its head in China, the OnePlus 8 will include the Snapdragon 865 and improved 5G.
OnePlus 8 tipped to feature Snapdragon 865 SoC & Snapdragon X55 modem
According to information that appeared on Weibo (Chinese social network), the OnePlus 8 will include both the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon X55. The Snapdragon 865 is Qualcomm's upcoming flagship processor. The Snapdragon X55, on the other hand, will be Qualcomm's improved modem for 5G connectivity.
For those of you who are out of the loop, the OnePlus 7 Pro did come in a 5G variant. The company, for some reason, decided not to make the same happen with the OnePlus 7T or 7T Pro. There is a chance that may happen during a separate event, but it did not happen initially.
It would not surprise us if OnePlus skipped the OnePlus 7T series 5G variant, though. 5G is still nowhere near where it should be, and the interest for 5G devices is not as high. What purpose is purchasing a 5G smartphone, and paying extra, if you cannot take advantage of its functionality.
Well, if this rumor is to be believed, the OnePlus 8 series will definitely include 5G connectivity. Qualcomm still did not announce the Snapdragon 865 or Snapdragon X55 modem. That is expected to happen in the near future, though.
If we had to guess, without even having access to this rumor, we would have easily guessed that the Snapdragon 865 will fuel the OnePlus 8. OnePlus has been utilizing Qualcomm's processors since the OnePlus One, so that's not surprising. The 5G variant of the OnePlus 8 is also a realistic expectation.
4G variants of the OnePlus 8 series will be available as well, almost certainly
You can still expect to see 4G variants of the OnePlus 8 smartphones, though, at least that's our guess. Just to be clear, this rumor claims that both OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will include 5G connectivity. It remains to be seen if that will be the case.
Whatever the case may be, 5G variants of the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will be available in specific regions only. Only regions that have access to 5G connectivity will get such variants, same as with the OnePlus 7 Pro. 5G will hopefully evolve further until mid-2020.
We've mentioned mid-2020 because that is when the OnePlus 8 series is expected to arrive. The OnePlus 7 series got launched in May, so the OnePlus 8 may follow in May 2020. There is always a chance OnePlus will alter its release cycle, of course.
This is not the first time we're hearing about the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, though. Both devices already surfaced in renders, believe it or not. And those two leaks actually came from a reliable source.
The two phones will look extremely similar. Both will be made out of metal and glass, and feature a display camera hole in the top-left corner of the display. Both devices will actually utilize curved displays, and extremely thin bezels.
In addition to Snapdragon 865, you can expect Android 10 to come pre-installed on both devices. Large batteries will probably be a part of the package as well, and probably even faster charging. It remains to be seen if OnePlus will include wireless charging, though.
