According to a new leak that surfaced online, Xiaomi is working on a brand new Mi 9 smartphone, a device that will support 5G connectivity. The phone will allegedly be called the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G, and aside from supporting 5G, it will also improve upon the Xiaomi Mi 9's specifications, it seems.
Now, a Xiaomi-branded phone with an "M1908F1XE" model number did get certified in China quite recently, and at first, people believed that we're looking at the upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX-branded smartphone, but that may not be the case. This may actually be the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G, if the provided report is to be believed.
This information comes from a Russian website "Xiaomishka", and the source specifically mentions the aforementioned model number for the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G. That's not all, as the source also claims that the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G will include a larger display than the Xiaomi Mi 9, and the resolution will also be improved.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 arrived earlier this year with a 6.39-inch fullHD+ display, well, the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G will allegedly ship with a QHD+ display, but we still do not know how large will it be, Xiaomi may be aiming at a 6.6 or a 6.7-inch panel, though. Chances are that the phone will retain an OLED panel, though, as going to an LCD unit wouldn't really be a smart move for Xiaomi.
The phone's camera setup will also be improved, as the source claims that this phone will include OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) on its main camera, which is something the Xiaomi Mi 9 did not have. The Xiaomi Mi 9 features a 48-megapixel main camera, and it's quite possible that the Mi 9 5G will retain that same sensor, Sony's IMX586 unit.
Considering that this will be a larger phone with a higher display resolution, it's not really a surprise Xiaomi also plans to include a larger battery here. The phone will not only ship with a larger battery, but also faster charging, as the phone is said to include 45W wired charging, compared to the Mi 9's 27W wired charging.
The source also guesses that the phone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, which is safe to assume, as that chip is already available to OEMs, and it would make sense to include the latest and greatest in a new flagship smartphone. The phone may include the regular Snapdragon 855 instead, but that's not as likely.
As far as the design is concerned, the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G will probably look extremely similar to the Xiaomi Mi 9. That means that you can expect to see a metal + glass build, curved back, and a flat display on the front. The phone will also include a dewdrop display notch, and thin bezels all around, though a "chin" will be a part of the package.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 5G probably will not include a 3.5mm headphone jack, as the Mi 9 did not, while Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on this phone, along with Xiaomi's MIUI 10 skin. The device will support wireless charging, quite probably the same 20W wireless charging that the Mi 9 supports. We're still not sure when will this device arrive, but chances are it will appear soon, as the Mi MIX 4 is expected to launch later this year.
