It's been quite a tease since the original announcement of the Beyond update, but No Man's Sky: Beyond will finally land on all supported systems August 14th. That's less than 2 weeks away to experience the largest free update Hello Games has ever dropped for No Man's Sky, and this is the big one that includes the game-changing VR support, too.
Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, No Man's Sky still retails for $59.99 on most platforms, and there's a very good reason for this. While the game launched with harsh criticism due to unmet expectations based on trailers and hands-on demos, the developers have turned that initial "failure" into what's one of the most enjoyable experiences of this entire gaming generation. Much of this involved several free updates to the game, which added features and ideas people were expecting from day one, as well as plenty of ideas that have launched the gameplay and enjoyment into the stratosphere.
Beyond will be the final free update for the game, and update that's aptly named as the previous update, "Next", was thought to be the final update. Since the Next update, Hello Games has seen a solid increase in sales and daily players of the game and is continuing its efforts to deliver a game that regularly gets better with age; a stark contrast to most games, which often stagnate and die a few months after release.
Headlining the updates in Beyond is, of course, the VR experience on the PlayStation VR and SteamVR. The SteamVR version is expected to support all headsets with SteamVR support (which is all notable headsets), and between the two major platforms, Beyond is said to bring in 1 million VR players to the experience day one. There have been several hands-on opportunities available to journalists since April, and the response has been unanimous: VR completely changes the game for the better, and offers quite possibly the single-most compelling experience to be had on any VR system.
What's particularly nice is that this VR experience is a new way to play the game, not a separate way, which is particularly important because of the new multiplayer features that are debuting in Beyond. As one of the three major updates that are a part of this update, the new multiplayer social experience is supposed to bring new and easier ways of meeting up with players and experiencing the world together.
Hello Games hasn't yet detailed every little thing that's being added to No Man's Sky with the Beyond update, but one thing is clear. As not only a free expansion but also the largest expansion yet, No Man's Sky is probably one of the best-value games that has been released in recent history. It's an astounding turn-around and one of the best redemption stories in modern gaming history.
You'll find the VR-specific trailer below, which begins with a player pulling a PlayStation VR (PS VR) headset on and entering the world of No Man's Sky. The experience shown should be identical across platforms.
