VIVO Teases Next Crazy Ambitious Android Phone Coming Next Week

VIVO is apparently gearing up for the release of a new smartphone boasting an unusual design. Earlier today the OEM uploaded a promotional poster (below) to its official Weibo account and confirmed that the unveiling will take place on January 24. The poster was accompanied by the caption “What is the future mobile phone?” hinting at a revolutionary design, but the image doesn’t share any details surrounding the smartphone’s exterior. Instead, it showcases a twisted chrome waterdrop which leaves a lot to the imagination. It’s unclear what the image is supposed to represent, but it doesn’t seem to hint at the inclusion of a waterdrop-shaped display notch, especially since this particular design cue is hardly viewed as the way of the future for mobile devices. The upcoming device could be the mysterious VIVO smartphone codenamed “Waterdrop” which was mentioned by the known leakster Ice Universe earlier this year.

Background: Last year VIVO launched numerous smartphones featuring display notches, whether rectangular or teardrop-shaped, but the most recent device introduced by the Chinese OEM in December does away with this polarizing design cue and instead it adopts two displays akin to the ZTE Nubia X, which was unveiled only a month earlier. As yet it’s unclear whether the VIVO NEX Dual Display will pave the way for the OEM’s future premium smartphones planned to hit the shelves throughout 2019, or if the aforementioned device was a one-off experiment. Whatever the case, if the latest reports turn out to be accurate then it looks like VIVO is not yet shying away from the idea of creating unusual handsets. A recent tweet from leakster Ice Universe described VIVO’s upcoming smartphone codenamed “Waterdrop” as having the ability to redefine the definition of smartphones in the minds of consumers. No other details were shared at that time, except for the image included in the gallery below which is supposed to reveal part of the smartphone’s back panel.

Impact: If the VIVO NEX Dual Display isn’t necessarily a preview of the “future mobile phone” in the eyes of the Chinese OEM – at least judging by the caption accompanying the recent promotional poster - then it remains to be seen just how ahead of its time the upcoming smartphone model “Waterdrop” is supposed to be, and what VIVO considers the way of the future for the mobile market. The unveiling event is less than two weeks away from the time of this writing, and while no hardware details pertaining to the upcoming model have surfaced just yet, it’s likely that VIVO will continue to tease the device and perhaps share more hardware information before the moment of truth arrives. As a starting point, it’s worth noting that the VIVO NEX Dual Display is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset so the upcoming “Waterdrop” device could be the OEM’s first handset to make the jump to Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 SoC, which is expected to fuel the majority of premium Android smartphones this year. The dual-screen device was also powered by Android 9.0 Pie along with FunTouch 4.5 on top, and this characteristic will likely remain unchanged for whatever comes next. But only time will tell whether VIVO will redefine, or at least inspire the future of mobile phones with this upcoming release.
