Let's face it, smart thermostats are pretty cool. Being able to control the temperature in your home from your phone and even with your voice, is something of the future. But it can also help you save some cold hard cash on heating and cooling. And who doesn't like saving some money? There are now many, many smart thermostats out there, but which ones are the best to buy? We've rounded up the best smart thermostats you can buy.
The smart thermostats listed below are all currently on sale. These are not just those that have been announced, only those that you can literally buy right now.
Nest Learning Thermostat - 3rd Generation
The Nest Learning Thermostat is arguably the OG of smart thermostats. It has been around for many years now, and it is still one of the best (depending on who you ask) available.
With this thermostat, it is actually "learning" your behavior, so it can keep your home nice and comfortable, and also save some money on heating and cooling. With Nest, you can set the thermostat to the temperature you want it to feel like in the home, and it will make sure it stays there, by raising and lowering the temperature automatically.
Nest also has a few other cool features, allowing you to turn it off when you're gone using the app. However, it can also learn when you are home and not home, so if you did forget to turn it off before you left, Nest will take care of it for you. Again, saving you money on energy costs. Nest also works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. There is a workaround for Apple's Homekit, since it is not technically supported.
The Nest Learning Thermostat usually is priced around $249 and doesn't typically drop in price, but it is just $215 right now. You can pick it up from Amazon using the link below.
ecobee4 Smart Thermostat
The ecobee4 is another really good smart thermostat you can pick up. This one actually has a pretty cool feature. So instead of just being Alexa compatible, it has Alexa built-in. Basically, think of it as having an Echo inside the thermostat. So you can ask your thermostat to change the temperature, or add something to your grocery list.
ecobee4 is also a really good looking smart thermostat, thanks to the black display here. So when the display is not on, it blends in with the bezels and looks great on the wall. The display, however, can show different things like the weather outside. Which is helpful when you are looking to adjust the temperature on the thermostat.
Smart thermostats already do a lot to save you money on heating and cooling costs, but ecobee4 takes it a step further. It comes with a room sensor that you can put in another room, further from the thermostat, possibly one that gets cold often. And it will get the temperature from that room and keep it the same temperature as the rest of your home. Which is a really nice feature to have, especially for larger homes.
ecobee4 doesn't work with the Google Assistant, and this is because Alexa is built-in. However, the ecobee3 and ecobee3 lite do work with Google Assistant. You can pick up the ecobee4 for $249 usually, but it is also on sale right now for $219. You can grab it from Amazon using the link below.
Honeywell Lyric T5 Smart Thermostat
Honeywell has a more inexpensive model here, which comes in at about $129. This is not a fancy smart thermostat, but it does still offer up the smart features you'd expect. The display is digital, but not as pretty as Nest and ecobee's options.
The Lyric T5 is a great option for those that just want to be able to have a smart thermostat. With the Honeywell app, you are able to control the temperature of your home from anywhere - in the world. Now it doesn't "learn" like the Nest Learning Thermostat does, but it will still save you some cash on heating and cooling expenses, as you'd expect from a smart thermostat.
Honeywell does support Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant here, allowing you to use your voice to control the thermostat too. So if you are watching TV and are feeling a bit cold, you can tell the Google Assistant to turn up the heat. Or vice versa, all without getting up from your comfy spot.
The Honeywell Lyric T5 Smart Thermostat is available for $129, which makes it one of the more inexpensive smart thermostats on the market. And you can pick it up from Amazon using the link below.
Nest Thermostat E
The Nest Learning Thermostat is great, but at $250, it is rather expensive. Nest does make a cheaper one, in the Thermostat E, that is usually around $169.
The Nest Thermostat E is a great option, and for many, it looks nicer than the company's more expensive model. It still does everything that the more expensive model does as well. Which makes it a bit weird that Nest offers both. But the Thermostat E does work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing you to control it with your voice. Like the rest of the thermostats on this list.
Nest does allow you to use the Home/Away features on this thermostat, so you can set it to turn down the heat or air conditioning when you are gone, and turn it up when you are home. You also have the ability to control it from your smartphone using the Nest app, which is a big bonus as well.
Emerson Sensi Smart Thermostat
Now, this is the cheapest smart thermostat that you can currently buy. The Emerson Sensi comes in at under $100. Making it a really good option for those that are looking for a smart thermostat.
The Emerson Sensi is not the sexiest looking smart thermostat out there, in fact, some might say it's pretty ugly. It's clear that Emerson did not spend a lot of time on the looks of this one. It actually looks like one of the "dumb" thermostats you'll find in many homes and apartments right now. And that might not be a bad thing.
This is compatible with Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant, allowing you to control the temperature of the home with your voice. So you can ask Alexa to adjust the heat if it's a bit cold in your home. It does also work with the Emerson app, so you can do it through your phone if you wish to do it that way instead. Both of which are really good options.
Emerson says that you will save around 23-percent annually on your heating and cooling costs. And for a thermostat that only costs $100, that means this is going to pay for its self really quickly. It could be the best investment you make in your new home (or old home).
The Emerson Sensi WiFi Smart Thermostat is available now from Amazon and you can pick it up from the link below.
Smart Thermostats are one of the more popular smart home products that people put into their home. And it's not hard to see why. These smart thermostats are pretty cool. They offer up some great features like being able to control them when you are not home, to help you save on heating and cooling costs. But these are also popular because of just that. They help you save some cash on heating and cooling and everyone wants to save money on their electricity bills.
Most of the smart thermostats listed here will pay for themselves in the first six months. The more expensive ones like the Nest Learning Thermostat and ecobee4, may take a bit longer. But within a year, they all pay for themselves. Many will save you close to 30-percent on your heating and cooling costs. And that's not bad either, especially for larger homes.
There are many smart thermostats on the market, these are really only a fraction of the ones available. But these are the best, in our opinion. The way we decided on these were based on a few things. Firstly, do they work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so that no matter what digital voice assistant you are using, it will work in your home. The other thing is the additional features that these add, and then the price. The Nest Thermostat E is likely the best of the best here, since it does still feature a ton of great features, and it is $169. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive. It's sitting in a good middle ground.
These are all great options, and the prices listed for these smart thermostats are accurate as of today - when this was published. Amazon and other retailers will sometimes change the price, which we can't really control. So keep that in mind when you are looking to make your purchase. We do our best to make sure the prices are accurate, however.
