In short: As Google promised in an email ahead of the launch today, the Pixel 3 pre-orders are now open. Verizon is once again the only carrier that will be carrying the Google Pixel 3, though you can still pick it up from the Google Store unlocked if you wish. Verizon is offering a pretty awesome deal on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, which is a buy one, get one free offer. So you can pick up the Pixel 3 and get one for free from Verizon through monthly bill credits. As always, the second of "free" phone must be equal to or cheaper than the phone you are paying for. So if you are buying one of each, the Pixel 3 would be the one that is "free". This is also only applicable on the 64GB model, and the Pixel 3 XL 64GB is priced at $799.
Background: Carriers typically launch buy one, get one offers for new phones when they first launch. As it's an easy way to get users in the door and buying new phones. It also is a good way to get buyers to actually buy some accessories to go with the phone, which is where carriers really make their money - besides the monthly service costs. So having a BOGO deal to kick off the Google Pixel 3 pre-orders is not a big deal and definitely a sign that Verizon doesn't think the Pixel 3 will sell well.
Impact: Pre-orders for the Google Pixel 3 start today, and they will begin shipping on October 17. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are available in three colors: black, white and sand. It is also available in 64GB and 128GB storage variants, though if you are looking to take advantage of this deal, you can only do so with the 64GB models. Which Verizon and Google do expect to be the more popular versions of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, as they were for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL last year.
