The camera improvements Samsung will introduce with the Galaxy Note 9 will be solely software-based, established industry insider from China known only by their social media handle "Ice Universe" said this weekend. The claim dovetails with a previous allegation that the dual-camera setup found on the rear plate of the upcoming Android phablet will be essentially identical to the one used by the Galaxy S9 Plus Samsung launched earlier this year. The system is expected to utilize two 12-megapixel sensors, with the main one being installed behind a variable-aperture lens supporting both f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture settings. The secondary module is said to leverage an f/2.4 lens, as was the case with the Galaxy S9 Plus.
The improvements that Samsung will debut with its next Android flagship should come in the form of "unique" algorithm changes and additions, the source said, without elaborating on the matter. One recent rumor already pointed to one such possible change, with the Galaxy Note 9 supposedly being capable of recording super slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second for 0.4 seconds, or twice as long as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. Due to the nature of the enhancements, the tweaks may eventually make their way to Samsung's other 2018 flagship lineup, though the company may not necessarily announce that move at its next Unpacked event which should see the announcement of the Galaxy Note 9.
The Galaxy S9 line debuted alongside a claim of a "reimagined" camera which is still touted as one of the best in the industry, so software improvements should be enough to help maintain the Galaxy Note 9's competitiveness on the imaging front, at least until next year. Samsung is now said to be looking at the possibility of incorporating triple-camera setups into its 2019 devices, including the top Galaxy S10 model and even a portion of the Galaxy A (2019) series. The Galaxy Note 9 itself will be officially announced this Thursday in New York City and should go on sale near the end of the month.
