AMC Android TV App Now Available To Download

AMC has now made available a dedicated Android TV app on the Google Play Store. This is pretty much a replica app of the mobile version but one which will evidently be better customized and optimized for the Android TV experience. The app provides access to a variety of AMC original shows, a limited selection of movies, as well as some additional content.

It is important to note this is not a traditional cord-cutting app in the general sense, as the app does not allow you to subscribe to just the AMC service for a flat monthly fee. Instead, the app simply acts as a direct Android TV access point for those who already have an active AMC subscription through a provider. Though, the provider list does include cord-cutting options like YouTube TV and DIRECTV NOW, as well as the more traditional cable-based options. So while the app itself is free to download, once it’s installed the user will still need to validate their AMC subscription through a main content provider before gaining full access.

The app also does provide access to AMC Premiere. This is a premium add-on which subscribers through certain providers can add to their subscription for an additional $5 per month. For the extra cost, AMC Premiere customers gain access to even more AMC content, including ad-free access to a number of the channel’s original shows. For reference, the Android TV app without AMC Premiere access is ad-based so those looking for more of an uninterrupted experience might want to consider the upgrade if it’s available through their current provider. In fact, the availability of the Android TV app has come at the same time that AMC announced YouTube TV support for AMC Premiere which is unlikely to be a coincidence, as the support confirmed YouTube TV as the only digital live TV service to offer access to AMC Premiere. YouTube TV subscribers can now add AMC Premiere to their monthly subscription directly through the settings portion of the YouTube TV website or the YouTube TV Android app - the add-on cannot be directly added through the new AMC Android TV app.
